The Internet has changed the way we see and get information, thats undeniable. But despite the revolution, the traditional way of getting and enjoying news is barely altered. People still love the good old newspaper.

Maybe its the smell of ink in the morning, or maybe its the texture of the papers on your fingers, but its definitely the headlines and columns that makes us fall in love. Newspaper publishers from all around the world have tested and perfected the easy-to-read layout for centuries. The practicality of reading web news in front of the computer screen still cant replace the comfort of reading the papers.

And maybe thats the reason why Anirudh Sasikumar created Readefine.

Lets Newspaper-ize Your Favorite Contents

To make a long story short, Readefine is both aweb service and adesktop application that will beautify your chosen web content into newspaper formatting. Similar to Readability and Readable.

If you move a lot between computers, you would want to use the web service as its accessible from any computer with internet connection, and no installation needed. The web interface allow you to fetch data from the web (in the form of RSS/Atom syndication, HTML, and text).

All you need to do is provide the URL, define what kind of content it is, and click the Go button. The page will be refreshed with newspaper formatting of the link that you requested.

Content that we are talking about here is not limited to web content only, but also other kinds of content. When you choose the second tab: From Computer, you will have the option to browse for files stored in your computers hard drive.

There is also an option to copy and paste text to have it converted into newspaper formatting. To do this, click the third tab: Via Copy and Paste.

Are you a Google Reader fan? Do you use it to manage your RSS/Atom subscriptions? Then you are in for a treat. Choose the fourth tab: From Google Reader, fill in your Google username and password, and let Readefine take care of the rest.

Newspapers Are In The AIR

And what about the desktop application? Its an Adobe AIR app. And as any other AIR applications, you have to install Adobe AIR runtime on your computer before you can use them. Then, and only then, you can proceed with the download.

The installation process goes just like any other installation; wait, confirm, choose location, that kind of thing.

The desktop application has a very similar look and functionality as the web version, but it gives users some extra features, such as: the ability to drag and drop text, HTML and RSS from the desktop/hard drive to the app.

Switch between articles by clicking at the one that we want on the top bar and sidebar.

The Looks & The Layout

What about customization? Can we adjust the layout to our preferences?

Sure you can. The most basic adjustment would be re-setting the width of the sidebar. All you have to do is click on the vertical border and drag it to the position that you want.

Further customizations could be found by clicking the small Aa button at the top right area of the window.

There are no fancy things here, not even the ability to choose a font. There are just some basics like: font size and column width. But these basics are enough to make me feel like at home.

That said, since its inception, Tumblr has continued to add new features enhancing the user experience, the latest of which is the Ask feature, opening up more means of interaction by allowing readers to submit questions, which you can choose to answer in the form of blog posts.

And of course, since its inception, third party apps have cropped up, complementing their straightforward approach to blogging. Here are 4 must-have free cross platform desktop and browser apps to blog on Tumblr.

Desktop Apps

Tumbleweed

When you open up the Adobe Air app, Tumbleweed, the first thing you see are your latest posts. Tumbleweed allows you to post to all 7 categories available on Tumblr, text posts, photos, quotes, links, chat, audio and video posts. When it comes to videos, you cant upload files directly from your computer to Tumblr, but rather have the ability to embed a video that is already available online.

Tumbleweed supports multiple tumblelogs, and you can add tags and custom urls to your posts when you blog on Tumblr.

Drawbacks: Posts are not automatically sent to your Twitter feed.

AlertThingy

AlertThingy is another Adobe Air client you can use to update your Tumblelog. You can add entries to any of the 7 categories, drag and drop photos, and audio and video files. To post a video, copy and paste the embed code into the body of a new text entry, and it will convert it into a video.

Drawbacks: AlertThingy does not support multiple Tumblelogs, posts are not sent to your Twitter feed, embedded videos are classified as text posts, and some of you might not like the fact that each post is appended with the text via AlertThingy.

Browser Apps

Chrome Tumblr Dashboard

If youre a Google Chrome fan, youll be happy to know the Chrome Dashboard extension allows you to share content easily from within Chrome, and to also check out the latest posts from tumblelogs you follow.

If youre watching a video online and want to share it the next time you blog on Tumblr, simply click on the Share on Tumblr link, and it will automatically embed the video for you and fill out the caption with the video title, and with YouTube videos, it also adds a link to the YouTube members profile page. Links and article titles are also automatically filled in for you. If there are several photos on a page, the extension will provide you with a list of thumbnails and choosing one fills in the link to the image from the website.

The Chrome extension gives you access to advanced Tumblr features including publishing options, tags and custom urls, and supports multiple tumblelogs.

Drawbacks: The window can be a little bit slow to load, and copy and paste doesnt work.

Tumblr Post

The Tumblr Firefox addon Tumblr Post gives you quick access to blog on Tumblr by letting you write a text entry, upload photos or audio files from your computer, as well as posting the link to the current page you are on, by right-clicking the Tumblr icon in the Firefox status bar on the bottom of the page.

If you come across a picture youd like to share on your Tumblelog, right click the image and choose Post photo to my tumblelog. To post a video, copy and paste the embed code into the body of a new text entry, and it will convert it into a video.

You can also add tags to your entries, add captions and set click-through links for images. Tumblr Post supports multiple tumblelogs.

Drawbacks: Uploading MP3 files from your computer doesnt seem to work at all, and all videos posted using Tumblr Post will be classified as text posts.

Cross-posting services

There are a few other services which enable cross-posting to several blogging sites, many of which include support for Tumblr, such as Posty, HelloTxt, Postling, Shareaholic, and Ping.fm, which also allows you to add a bot to your Google Talk contacts list, which will allow you to update your Tumblelog using IM.

5 Cool About:Config Hacks To Make Firefox Browsing Smoother

Theres no doubt in anybodys mind that Mozilla Firefox is one of the best browsers out there. It also has the honor of being the biggest rival to Microsofts Internet Explorer.

Part of the reason behind Firefoxs success is the fact that there is an awesome team of individuals behind it, who work around the clock to make it live up to the stringent quality standards, which are a hallmark of Mozilla.

However, there is a second, almost equally important reason as to why each version of Firefox is a runaway success. Theres virtually no limit to the amount of customization you can apply to Firefox. Most of these come in the form of extensions (small add-ons, which add to the functionality).

Make Firefox Free Up RAM When Minimized:

Unless you have a RAM behemoth for a rig, you will know that RAM is a precious commodity. Simply put, RAM is like a container into which all applications are thrown when they are first run. The applications carry out all their processing in the RAM and then leave the RAM when they are done.

The problem arises in the way Firefox handles RAM. Most programs return unused RAM when they are minimized. Firefox, on the other hand does not do so. So, the Firefox ninjas around the world found an about:config workaround for it:

In the Filter search, type: config.trim_on_minimize

Right click on the setting and click toggle so that the Value turns to true.

From now on, Firefox will act like any other Windows app and return all unused memory when minimized.

Stop Websites From Blinding You With Blinking Text:

Some webmasters have this crazy habit of making text on their pages blink. Maybe its their idea of looking cool, but in reality, its nothing more than a major irritation. Coupled with that is the fact that it really tires your eyes. Heres how you can change about:config to disable blinking text:

In the Filter search, type: browser.blink_allowed

Right click on the setting and click toggle so that the Value turns to false. This disables the blinking.

Linux users will vouch for how awesome pasting with the middle mouse button is. Now, Windows users can get the same functionality within Firefox. You guessed it! You need to go to about:config to do the following:

Name it ui.submenuDelay and set it to 0

You may have installed countless add-on in Firefox to enhance your using experience, but if you want to get the most out of Firefox, you really have to hack your way into the about:config.

The about:config page contains most (if not, all) of Firefox configuration options. It is so far the most effective, and the most powerful way to tweak and enhance your Firefox performance. Here are 28 of the popular tweaks.

Accessing your about:config page

In your Firefox, type about:config in the address bar.

You will be shown a warning page. Click the Ill be careful, I promise! button to proceed.

On the main page, you will see a long list of configuration entries. Enter the name of the key you want to update in the Filter field. The list will narrow to only the entries that match your keyword as you type.

To modify the value, simply double click on the entry value field and update the entry. Thats all!

Isnt that simple? Now, lets get to the tweaking.

1) Adjust the Smart Location Bars Number of Suggestions

In Firefox 3, when you start typing in the location bar, a drop-down list of suggestion URLs will be shown. If you want it to show more than 12 suggestions (12 is the default), you can adjust the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults keys and get it to show the number you want.

Config name: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
Default: 12
Modified value: Set to your desired number of suggestion. If you want to disable it all together, set it to -1

2) Disable the session restore function

Firefox 3 automatically saves your session every 10 secs so that whenever it crashes, it can restore all your tabs. While this is a useful feature, some of you might find it irritating. To disable this function, toggle the value of browser.sessionstore.enabled to False

Config name: browser.sessionstore.enabled
Default: True
Modified value: False if you want to disable the session restore function

3) Adjust the Session Restore Saving Frequency

Same as above, if you decided to keep the session restore feature on, but want to reduce the session saving frequency, change the value of browser.sessionstore.interval so that Firefox will save the session at a longer interval.

Config name: browser.sessionstore.interval
Default: 10000 (in msecs, equivalent to 10secs)
Modified value: Set it to your desired value. 1000 means 1 sec and 60000 means 1 minute.

4) Enable Advanced Color Profile Support

Firefox has this advanced color profile features that display higher image quality. It is not enabled by default as it has a negative effect on the performance of the browser. If you are concern with the image quality rather than the performance, you can activated it via the gfx.color_management.enabled setting

Config name: gfx.color_management.enabled
Default: False
Modified value: True (if you want to activate the color profile support feature)

5) Disable Antivirus Scanning

This is mainly for Windows users. By default, Firefox 3 automatically scan the downloaded file with the default anti-virus application to make sure it is free of virus. If you download a big file, it could take a long time for the whole scanning process to complete. To increase the performance of the browser, you might want to consider disabling the anti-virus scanning via the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone key.

Config name: browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone
Default: True
Modified value: False (if you want to disable it)

6) Configuring The Scrolling Tabs

When you opened many tabs, Firefox will not keep on reducing the tab width. Instead, it shows a scrolling bar so that the min width (100px) is conserved and you can scroll to find your tabs. If you are those who dont like the scrolling tab function and prefer Firefox to show all the tabs, regardless how small it is, you can set the value of browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to 0 to disable it. Similarly, if you want Firefox to display more tabs before showing the scrolling button, you can reduce the default value to a lower value, say 75 pixels.

Config name: browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
Default: 100
Modified value: 0 if you want to disable the scrolling functions, other values to set the min width value

7) Show/Disable Close button on Tabs

Some people love to see the Close (the red X) button on every tabs, but some hate it. Whatever is it, you can configure it to your preferences via the browser.tabs.closeButtons setting.

Config name: browser.tabs.closeButtons
Default: 1
Modified values:

0 display a close button on the active tab only
1- display close buttons on all tabs
2- dont display any close buttons
3- display a single close button at the end of the tab strip

8) Extend Scripts Execution Time

In Firefox 3, a script is only given 10 seconds to respond, after which it will issue a unresponsive script warning. If you are hooked on a slow network connection, you might want to increase the script execution time via dom.max_script_run_time to cut down on the frequency of the no script warning.

Config name: dom.max_script_run_time
Default:10 (in secs)
Modified value: 20, or any values greater than 10

9) Handling JavaScript Popups

When you come across a site that executes a javascript open new window function, and if the popup window is without all the usual window features, i.e. back/forward/reload buttons, status bar etc, Firefox will automatically treat it as a popup and will not open it as a new tab. However, if you find this to be a nuisance and wanted to open all new windows in a new tabs, you can specify it via the browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction setting.

Config name: browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
Default: 2 Open all JavaScript windows the same way as you have Firefox handle new windows unless the JavaScript call specifies how to display the window
Modified values:

0 open all links as how you have Firefox handle new windows
1 do not open any new windows
2- open all links as how you have Firefox handle new windows unless the Javascript specify how to display the window

10) Enable Spell Checking In All Text Fields

The default spell checking function only checks for multi-line text boxes. You can get it to spell-check for single line text box as well.

Config name: layout.spellcheckDefault
Default: 1 (spell checker for multi-lines text boxes only)
Modified values:

0 disable the spell checker
2 enable the spell checker for all text boxes

11) Open Search Box Results In New Tab

When you search using the search box at the top right hand corner of the browser, it will display the search results in the current tab. If you dont want the search to interfere with your current tab, you can tweak the browser.search.openintab to make it open in a new tab.

Config Name: browser.search.openintab
Default: False
Modified value: True (open search box results in new tab)

12) Lower The Physical Memory Used When Minimized

This tweak is mainly for Windows users. When you minimize Firefox, it will send Firefox to your virtual memory and free up your physical memory for other programs to use. Firefox will reduce its physical memory usage, when minimized, to approximately 10MB (give or take some) and when you maximize Firefox it will take back the memory that it needs.

The preference name does not exist and needs to be created.

Right click on the background and select New->Boolean.

Enter the name when prompted: config.trim_on_minimize
Enter the values: True

13) Speed up your Firefox

Several tweaks required for this

14) Increase/Decrease the Amount of Disk Cache

When a page is loaded, Firefox will cache it into the hard disk so that it doesnt need to be download again for redisplaying. The bigger the storage size you cater for Firefox, the more pages it can cache.

Before you increase the disk cache size, make sure that browser.cache.disk.enabled browser.cache.disk.enable is set to True.

Config name: browser.cache.disk.capacity
Default: 50000 (in KB)
Modified value:

0 disable disk caching
any value lower than 50000 reduces the disk cache
any value higher than 50000 increases the disk cache.

15) Select all text when click on the URL bar

In Windows and Mac, Firefox highlights all text when you click on the URL bar. In Linux, it does not select all the text. Instead, it places the cursor at the insertion point. Regardless which platform you are using, you can now tweak it to either select all or place cursor at insertion point.

16) Autofill Address in URL Bar

Other than the smart location feature, you can also get your URL bar to autofill the address as you type the URL.

17) Same Zoom Level For Every Site

Firefox remembers your zoom preference for each site and set it to your preferences whenever you load the page. If you want the zoom level to be consistent from site to site, you can toggle the value of browser.zoom.siteSpecific from True to False.

Config name: browser.zoom.siteSpecific

Modified value: False (enable same zoom preferences for every sites)

18) Setting your zoom limit

If you find that the max/min zoom level is still not sufficient for your viewing, you can change the zoom limit to suit your viewing habits.

19) Configure Your Backspace Button

In Firefox, you can set your backspace to better use by getting it to either go back to the previous page or act as page up function.

20) Increase Offline Cache

If you do not have access to Internet most of the time, you might want to increase the offline cache so that you can continue to work offline. By default, Firefox 3 caches 500MB of data from supported offline Web apps. You can change that value to whatever amount of your choice.

Default: 512000 (in KB)
Modified value: any value higher than 512000 will increase the cache value

21) Auto Export Firefox 3 bookmarks to bookmarks.html

Unlike the previous version, Firefox 3 backup the bookmarks file in places.sqlite rather than the usual bookmarks.html. Since bookmarks.html allows us to export and sync our bookmarks with other browser, it will be very useful if Firefox 3 can backup the bookmark to the bookmarks.html as well.

Modified value: True (auto export bookmarks file to bookmarks.html)

22) Disable Extension Compatibility Checks

This is useful if you want to use an extension that is not supported by your version of Firefox badly. It is not recommended, but you can still do it at your own risk.

Right click and select New->Boolean. Enter extensions.checkCompatibility in the field. Enter False in the next field.

Right click again and select New->Boolean. Enter extensions.checkUpdateSecurity into the field and enter False into the next field.

23) Disable Delay Time When Installing Add-on

Everytime you wanted to install a Firefox add-on, you will have to wait for several secs before the actual installation starts. If you are tired of waiting, you can turn the function security.dialog_enable_delay off so that the installation will start immediately upon clicking.

24) View Source in Your Favorite Editor

This is very useful for developers who are always using the view source function. This tweak allows you to view the source code in an external editor.

There are two configuration need to be made:
Config name: view_source.editor.external
Default: False
Modified value: True ( enable view source using external text editor)

Modified value: insert the file path to your editor here.

25) Increasing Save Link As timeout value

When you right click and select the Save Link As, the browser will request the content disposition header from the URL so as to determine the filename. If the URL did not deliver the header within 1 sec, Firefox will issue a timeout value. This could happen very frequently in a slow network connection environment. To prevent this issue from happening frequently, you can increase the timeout value so as to reduce the possibility of a timeout.

Config name: Browser.download.saveLinkAsFilenameTimeout
Default: 1000 (1 sec)
Modified value: any value higher than 1000 (value is in msec)

26) Animate Fullscreen Toolbar Collapse mode

In Firefoxs fullscreen mode, toolbars and the tab strip are hidden at the top of the screen and only shown on mouseover. To draw attention to this, there is an animation of the toolbar sliding upwards and off-screen when fullscreen mode is toggled on. For performance issue, the animation of the collapse of the toolbar only appear for the first time. For some reason that you may love/hate the animation, you can adjust Browser.fullscreen.animateUp to switch it on/off for every collapse.

Config name: Browser.fullscreen.animateUp
Default: 1 (animate the toolbar collapse only the first time)
Modified value:

0 -disable the animation
2- enable the animation for every collapse

27) Autohide Toolbar in Fullscreen mode

In fullscreen mode, the toolbar is set to autohide and appear upon mouseover. If you have a need to view the toolbar at all time, you can toggle the value of browser.fullscreen.autohide to False to always show the toolbar.

Config name: browser.fullscreen.autohide
Default: True (always autohide)
Modified value: False (always show the toolbar)

28) Increase Add-On search result

If you go to Tools->Add-ons->Get Add-ons and perform a search there, Firefox will only fetch and display 5 matching results. If you want Firefox to show more than 5 results (say 10), you can adjust extensions.getAddons.maxResults to get it to display more results.

Modified value: any value more than 5

How To Create Custom Search Engines In Google Chrome

No matter how hard I looked, I couldnt find a custom search box in the Google Chrome browser.Even Internet Explorer has a search box, so why shouldnt Chrome?

In developing the browser, Google did away with the separate search box, if not with the functionality. It was only in confrontation with my own ignorance that I rediscovered this feature.

Youve probably discovered how you can launch a Google search directly from your address bar. Using keywords and a few minutes work in advance, you can also set up custom search engines. In this article, well explain how to configure and use this feature, as well as how to change the default and create a custom search engine.

Using Keywords For a Custom Search Engine

To use one of your custom search engines, you have to precede the query with a special keyword. How to assign this keyword, well show in a minute.

To illustrate, when I want to search MakeUseOf, I simply type makeuseof <search query>. The uses can be extremely diverse, and in general hugely speed up your browsing process. When writing an article, I but have to type dict <strange english word> to get a dictionary explanation. Similarly, you can use keywords to search YouTube, Flickr, eBay, Craigslist, Facebook, FilesTube, DeviantArt, and whatnot.

By default, Google Chrome uses the sites domain and extension as keyword (e.g. makeuseof.com), but its highly advised to devise your own keywords things that are easy to remember and quick to type, like dict, goog, yout, subs, and so on. In the end, it all comes down to preference and ease of use.

Adding a Custom Search Engine

Now youre warmed up to the idea, heres how to add a custom search engine. The instructions below should work on both Mac and Windows.

The easiest way to open the search preferences window is to right-click (Mac: ctrl+click)in the address bar and select Edit Search Engines alternatively, you can also go to Preferences -> Default Search: Manage.

A preferences pane much like the one below should pop up. Youll notice (to your big surprise?) that a lot of different search engines have already been added. This is because Chrome automatically adds search engines to the list after you search from a site. Most of the ones youre looking to add are probably already there, but you need to change the keyword.

Otherwise, its pretty easy to add a search engine manually. You just need to supply the name, keyword and URL. Not simply the site URL, mind. Youll need to show Chrome where to insert the search string.

To find the correct URL, simply launch a search on the site, and take a look at the address bar. Youll need to replace your own search query with %s to create the search URL for Chrome.Perhaps even easier, you should be able to search for %s on the site, and just copy the entire URL.

Changing the keyword (or any of the other options) afterwards is as easy as double clicking on a search engine.

To create a new default search engine, simply select one from the list and press Make Default in the bottom right corner. If you want a Firefox-like search experience, you can create a custom feeling lucky search, and make it default. As easy as that.

High Sign: control your PC using mouse gestures

In this post I will review High Sign, an excellent freeware mouse gesture program. While Samer has previously reviewed gMote, another mouse gesture program, I planned on reviewing StrokeIt which has been around for a long while now and is almost the founding father of freeware mouse gesture software. Unfortunately, when I installed StrokeIt, it did not leave a very good impression, with the software not working fully and with unclear implementation step. I therefore began a search for a better alternative, and High Sign is the program that I found.

Mouse Gestures serve much the same purpose as keyboard shortcuts; theyre supposed to make you faster, more productive, more efficient, and more comfortable. Instead of switching hands from mouse to keyboard and back or minimizing everything to the desktop, mouse gestures allow you to perform actions or start programs all from the mouse with a few swift movements. High Sign comes pre-loaded with a number of gestures, some work for all applications like closing or minimizing a window.

You can create your own gestures by entering a Training mode. High Sign starts in Training mode by default or right-click on the system tray icon to find the option to toggle. Anything you draw (by holding down the right-click) in training will prompt and ask what you drew. You can specify an existing gesture or create a new gesture. The prompt offers what it thinks the closest existing gesture is. This is a good function because it can let you know if the gestures are too much alike where a different action might occur because your gesturing was a little sloppy. For example, when I drew the number 4 below, it prompted with a pre-existing gesture H. When you toggle out of Training Mode, it will just perform any actions that are associated with the gestures youve drawn.

High Sign seems to be very forgiving and very accurate when it comes to getting the correct gesture from what you drew. When you create a new gesture, you can specify the action that it takes to come from a list of preset functions like sending a hotkey, sending a keystroke, running a command, opening a web browser or others. You can choose to affect a select program by choosing from those processes running at the time. To send keystrokes, you use the Send Keys syntax. You can do a quick Google Search to find the Send Keys syntax. As an example, the keystroke Alt-D would be %D, Ctrl-C would be ^C, and taking a screenshot of the active window (Alt + Print Screen) would be %{PRTSC}. High Sign, by default, does not start up with Windows. It has a system tray icon that allows you access to all the different functions. You can find the preferences and preconfigured actions and gestures. High Sign comes as 820 KB installer and a 50 MB process when running. You cant easily toggle HighSign off or on, but you can close the program from the system tray.

The preferences allow you to customize a lot of the different options. You can change the color of your line and startup options. It also allows a sneak peak at some upcoming features that could be pretty cool like opacity control and an Ignore key option.

While High Sign is only a 2nd alpha preview release, its fully functional. If the program continues to see development time, I have to believe that its going to be made into one stellar program as far as mouse gesture programs can go. It was originally created as a StrokeIt replacement but the developer has changed his goals to be more ambitious than just recreating StrokeIt. High Sign is open source and hosted by CodePlex, a site and repository for open-source projects.

JumpTo: access favorite apps, files, folders, or URLs from anywhere

JumpTo is a free menu-based launcher that provides access to favorite folders, files, apps, or URLs in the form of a hotkey-enabled context menu. It can be accessed on the fly at any time on the desktop or via the system tray icon. In addition it provides on-the-fly note taking functionality as well as a few other functions such as hiding and showing windows, stripping formatting from the clipboard, and others.

I have a soft spot for little apps that access to favorite items on-the-fly. JumpTo provides access to folders, files, apps, and URLs from anywhere and can be displayed in any program. It is very similar to previously mentioned Folder Menu, with some differences. Heres a list of pros and cons.

PROS:

Launch your favorite folders, files, apps, or URLs from anywhere: simply launch the app via its keyboard shortcut and you can be quickly on your way.
Memos: JumpTo also includes a simple notes app. It can quickly
Create your own submenus: which is to say it lets you create and organize the cascading menu entries as you like.
Adding items: can be performed via the context menu entry, by highlighting an item and pressing Alt+shift+S, or by opening the add items dialog and dragging and dropping items into it.
Less than 4 megs in memory: makes this program truly lightweight.
Extra functions: via the "extra functions" context menu entry launch a run box, insert dates dynamically into your text, or strip any text in the clipboard from any formatting. You can also hide and display windows.
Portable version: is available for download on the site.

CONS:

Does not provide access to favorite folders in Windows open/save dialogs: unlike for example similar apps such as Folder Menu.
Does not support icons: which is to say your app shortcuts and other shortcuts will be represented using text only. Not a big deal, but could have looked better with icons.

The verdict: a nice little app that and is truly lightweight. It has room for improvement in terms of accessing folders in open/save dialogs but as it is it can be extremely useful and a huge time saver.

VistaSwitcher: slick, simple applications switcher and Alt+Tab replacement

VistaSwitcher is a free application switcher/Alt+Tab replacement for (despite the name) Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. It features a slick interface, application preview thumbnails, and the ability to perform operations such as minimizing, maximizing and closing windows or apps from the VistaSwitcher interface.

It looks pretty darn slick: dont take my word for it, check out the screenshot.
Preview thumbnails: see a thumbnail preview of the apps or windows as you scroll through them. Previews are available not just for maximized windows but for minimized windows in Vista and Windows 7 (but not in XP).
Sticky: you can turn this mode on if you like. It will allow you to launch VistaSwitcher with Alt+Tab (or another shortcut), release the keys, and have the VistaSwitcher interface remain open. (Which I quite like actually)
Windows operations: you can right click on an entry in the VistaSwitcher interface and perform some operations such as minimize, maximize, or close.
Memory use: about 9 megs (which is fairly small).
Native 64 bit version available.

The verdict: this app is the successor to TaskSwitchXP, which I am very fond of (they are both from the same developer). What I like about it is that it manages to be simultaneously slick, simple, and low on resources (and of course free). What more could you ask for?

Nine ways to check RSS feeds (including some unusual ones)

There are many ways to check RSS feeds. Two of the most popular are using a local RSS client (such as RSSOwl) and using a web-based reader (such as Google Reader). This posting will present nine interesting (and at times unusual) free ways to check RSS feeds, including using dekstop widgets (KlipFolio), RSS feeds as tabs on the side of your screen (Stick), RSS feeds within a dockable desktop area (SideSlide), as desktop sticky notes (Note Mania), embedded in your desktop wallpaper (Chaos Wallpaper), as news-tickers scrolling across your screen (EasyDeskTicker), and delivered as emails in your inbox (FeedMyInbox).

I am interested in the larger question of the different ways we request and consume information, and often think about the many different ways that RSS feeds are delivered and read, which is how this post was borne.

1- Using a web-based reader [Google Reader]: probably the most successful of the many free web-based RSS aggregators, Google Reader is the one I use to handle the many dozens of RSS feeds I subscribe to. The advantage of using a web based reader is, of course, the ability to access your RSS feeds from anywhere (say from a computer terminal at your local library), or even from a mobile device such as an iPhone.

Google Reader offers the ability to organize feeds in categories and tags and supports multimedia feeds such as podcasts. But what I like about Google reader is that it will maintain a history of RSS subscriptions that is preserved long after the original feed has moved on (i.e. you can see the backlog/history of an RSS feed previous to the latest 20 stories that a feed will typically display at any one time). Another unique feature is the option to star an RSS entry and have Google Reader broadcast your starred items within your very own RSS feed, which is a great way to filter out just the stuff you are interested in (and share your starred items RSS feed with others or on a widget on your site if you like). Also note that Google Reader also provides the ability the follow other users that use it and/or to share news items amongst users.

Alternative: Bloglines is another web-based aggregator option that is excellent.

2- Using a desktop aggregator [RSSOwl]: Ive used many local freeware RSS clients, but the open source and multiplatform RSSOwl is my favorite (available for Windows/Linux/Mac). One feature I particularly like is its sophisticated, multi-criteria searches which you can actually save for later use. For example you could search for the terms freeware PDF and specify which feeds you want it to search in (say, only in 4 feeds) as well as where you want it to search (say, in just the headline, or the entire text). Finally you can save the search so it becomes an item in the sidebar alongside all the other feeds, and gets updated with new search results as new feeds are downloaded.

RSSOwl also supports tagging (which it terms adding labels) and will let you organize your RSS views using many different criteria (by date, by author, by category, by topic, by state, by stickiness, by label, by rating, or by feed). It also supports the so-called river of news viewing style where it will aggregate stories bases on date irrespective of the feeds they belong to. The other thing I like about RSSOwl is that it supports ATOM newsfeeds, which some clients strangely miss). It also can display RSS updates as they come in in the system tray area.

Two things I would love to see are (a) better support for Podcasts and multimedia feeds, and (b) an interface that is a little more user friendly; still, RSS Owl is definitely my favorite local RSS client.

3- Using a desktop widget [Klipfolio]: at one time it seemed that everyone was clamoring to put widgets on your desktop, from Google desktop to Yahoo widgets to Microsoft desktop search (and not forgetting Vistas internal widgets). But my favorite freeware widget engine by far is Klipfolio, which manages to combine an excellent user experience with low resource utilization on your PC (and offers a wide range of powerful widgets to boot). Klipfolio is a winner when it comes to the coolness factor alone. And aside from RSS feeds, its also a great way to put Facebook, stocks, weather, and other information on your desktop (assuming you want all those things to lay claims on your attention bandwidth at all times ).

Klipfolio can dock to the side of your screen or be displayed as a floating window. You can click on an RSS item to view it in the browser or hover over it to view the story, in-place, as a hovering tooltip (see screenshot).

4- As tabs on the edge of your desktop [Stick]: Stick is a nifty freeware app that allows you to place all sorts of information (such as notes, folders, and RSS feeds) within tabs on the side of your screen (see screenshot). It will also optionally display real-time notifications of incoming feeds in the system tray area.

Whats different about tabs, of course, is that unlike say desktop widgets they are less obtrusive and in-your-face, yet instantly and immediately accessible through a simple click. They can, in other words, be used to both organize information and de-clutter your desktop as well as make that information available at your fingertips simultaneously.

5- Inside a dockable area on your desktop [SideSlide]: similar in concept to Stick above, SideSlide delivers a sort of virtual desktop that you can dock and undock in the top of your screen, and where you can place many different things including notes, shortcuts, virtual containers that point to actual folders, and RSS feeds.

SideSlides dockable interface presents another interesting option for making information instantly available within a couple of clicks yet being able to keep it out of your way when you dont want it. The interface takes a little bit of getting used to and is a little clunky, and the RSS function provides options such as searching and tagging, among others.

6- As post-it sticky notes [Note Mania] : I was considering a review of a freeware sticky notes program a few weeks ago called Note Mania. I didnt end up writing one (although I probably should have, as it is a really good one), but what struck me as being really unique and original was the option to display RSS feeds as sticky notes on your desktop (see screenshot).

Just imagine: you log into your PC and the RSS feeds you subscribe to are displayed as sticky notes on your desktop. You can then delete the stories you are not interested in and either click on the ones you want to read or simply keep them as desktop sticky notes to remind you to read them later on.

7- Embedded into your wallpaper [Chaos Wallpaper]: this program will embed RSS feed stories into your active desktop. Feed items can be clickable as well as scrollable through the on-screen slider on the right, and will update/refresh your feeds periodically. If you know a bit of HTML you can tweak the CSS stylesheets in order to modify the way that feeds are displayed on the desktop.

Note that aside from this functionality Chaos Wallpaper also functions as a very competent wallpaper changer.

8- As scrolling stock-tickers across your screen [EasyDeskTicker]: EasyDeskTicker displays your RSS feeds as horizontally scrolling news-tickers reminiscent of the scrolling stock and/or news tickers that are displayed on TV and even in some public venues. It allows you to add any number of news-ticker streams, to place them anywhere on screen, and to customize their behavior and speed, their color scheme as well as the size of the fonts, etc.

I would say that this is one of the most versatile and powerful stock-ticker type RSS feed readers out there, and is visually very smooth and problem-free. Note, however, that this program is free for private use only (vs. commercial). Also note that the way it works is each horizontal ticker you add has its own options dialog, which at first I didnt realize and caused me some confusion.

9- As email in your Inbox [FeedMyInbox]: if you prefer to receive email notifications rather than subscribe to RSS feeds, FeedmyInbox is a free web service that can receive RSS feeds for you and automatically email them to an address you specify. Please note, however, that many sites (such as this one) offer the option to subscribe to both RSS feeds or to email notifications, so in theory for many sites you will not need the FeedMyInbox service. However, if a site does not offer email notifications, or if you like its RSS feed better than the emails that it offers (and I know that for example that for Freewaregenius the emails are very abbreviated) then FeedMyInbox may be for you.

RUNit: a nice, quick-access launcher that you will like

RUNit is a free launcher accessed via right clicking a hot area on your screen (the top edge of the screen by default). You can set up multiple lists of items to be accessed via different hot areas of the screen. RUNit can launch apps, URLS, documents, or folders, supports drag and drop when adding items, is customizable, and is portable.

I learned about this from a comment on the RocketDock post that read best launcher ever RUNit 2.0.1b! (thanks to reader rws). So I searched for and found it and I really, really like it.

As launchers go the unique aspect of RUNit is the way it is accessed, by right clicking on the upper edge of the screen (or alternately you can enable shift-right-clicking anywhere on the screen or simply ctrl+shift). Which isnt quite revolutionary, except that it can be accessed extremely quickly and somehow delivers a really nice user experience. Here are more notes:

Set up different lists: you can create wholly different lists of items and specify different shortcuts for accessing them. For example you can set it up such that right clicking the top edge of the screen can display your apps while right clicking the bottom edge displays favorite URLs or whatever.
Drag and drop: to add items, simply drag shortcuts, files, URLs or pretty much anything from anywhere to the RUNit setup dialog. The setup has a button that can reconcile shortcuts automatically, though I am not sure why the user has to actually press it for this to take place.
Customizable: you can select large or different icons, change the font used, edit the order of items, launch apps minimized or maximized, and even set the coordinated on screen where you want a particular app to be placed when launched.
Cascading menu structure: is supported; use dividers and create folders and subfolders within your menu.
Portable: unzip and run; does not write to the registry.
Source code: is available for download.

The verdict: the RUNit site states that no one who has ever tried it could live without it anymore, and after trying it I can see that theres a lot of truth to that statement. A very nice launcher indeed.

DragTargets: easily copy or move files to frequently used folders

DragTargets is a free app designed to make it easy to drag and drop your files into frequently used folders. Shortcuts to favorite folders (including folders on external drives) can be placed as buttons on a semi-transparent floating widget, and can be used to quickly move or copy files or access these folders.

Although I have a handful of folders designated for specific projects and topics, I notice that whenever I am working on something most of the files I am using invariably end up on the desktop. If this is your experience as well (or indeed if you download a lot of files into the desktop and have to sort them out later) then you should check this program out.

What DragTargets does is allow you to set up your frequently used favorite folders as buttons in a floating desktop widget. You can then drag and drop your files to the appropriate folder in the DragTargets window to copy or move them to the right place, or simply click on the folder button to open the folder. More notes on this program below:

Copy or move: dragging files copies them by default; to move files instead check the little box next to the stop button.
Open folders: click on the folder button to open it in explorer
Portable: unzip and use, no install needed.
Memory use: about 7 megs, which is fairly small.

Wish list (or how this program can be a lot better)

Minimize to tray: essential, I think, for a program like this.
Show and hide by hotkey: would make it so much more useful.
The option to switch off semi-transparency

The verdict: a nice little program that can potentially be extremely useful. It can however be much improved with a few little tweaks though (see wish list above!).
