Leyton Buzzards - Radio 1 In Concert 1979 [New Window]
I was sorting through more boxes of old tapes and was well pleased when I uncovered this little gem. An old friend gave me this many years ago and I had forgotten all about it. I did a quick search and it doesn't appear to be posted anywhere else.So here's one for you to enjoy. You're hear from the intro that this came of the back of their winning a high profile (BBC1 and the Sun) "Battle of the Bands" contest. Following this they were signed up by "Chrysalis Records".This concert has them supporting Bethnal (only got the Buzzards here, and personally for me, its the part to have). It's includes most their best songs, and their first two singles "19 & Mad" and "Saturday Night Beneath the Plastic Palm Trees". So if you never got to see the Leyton Buzzards you can now here what they were like.Enjoy.Band: The Leyton BuzzardsYear: 1979 (anyone know the actual date?)Album: Radio 1 In ConcertTracks:1. Intro2. The Greatest Story Ever Told3. Sweet Dream4. I Don't Want To Go To Art School5. Saturday Night Beneath The Plastic Palm Trees6. No Dry Ice Or Flying Pig7. Last Tango In Paris8. 19 & Mad9. Ultravox - John Peel Sessions 1977 [New Window]
Some of you will recognise the cover and some of you will also say, "Hey wasn't this already posted over at the excellent Ad Nauseam", and the answer to that is (nearly) yes (you can still see the Ad Nauseam post here).I confess I have borrowed the same cover, but this time up all four tracks from the classic 1977 session are included. I haven't had a chance to compare rips, so you may want to try both and make up the combination that best suits you.Now you all know I love the John Foxx Ultravox so I was really chuffed when I finally found all four tracks. So the missing track was the excellent "The Man Who Dies Every Day" and now you can hear them all.Band: Ultravox!Album: John Peel Sessions 21/11/19771. My Sex2. The Man Who Dies Everyday3. Artificial Life4. Young SavageRipped from glorious hissing tape (see comment for link)If you like this, the you should have these, buy them now, they all include extra tracks and are pretty cheap, so no excuses: Ultravox! Ride Live in Glastonbury in 1994 [New Window]
:) Baixar

Barry Biggs - Work All Day 7" [New Window]
Most people in the UK (well anyone between the age of 40-55) will remember Barry Biggs for his cover of "Sideshow" (a no prize for anyone who can name who recorded the 1974 original) which reached number 3# in the UK charts in 1976. Personally I thought it was OK but nowhere near as good as his debut UK single also released in 1976 "Work All Day"."Work all day" is a catchy and I guess more on the popular side of the reggae sound, but who cares I like it. The b-side consists of the good traditional dub version "Play all night" by the Dynamics.Does anyone else remember this one?Artist Barry BiggsLabel: DynamicYear: 1976Tracks:1. Work All Day2. Play All Night - The DynamicsRipped from glorious very scratched vinyl (see comment for link)If you like this, you won't go far wrong with buying his greatest hits here, its more expensive but more complete and includes, Sideshow, Work all Day (but not the b-side) and also his first big hit in Jamaica, another cover of the Osmonds hit "One Bad Apple": Sideshow: the Best of Barry BiggsThis one is a bit cheaper but not so complete (the Osmonds cover is not included): Sideshow

Chaino - Jungle Echoes (1959) [New Window]
MINIMALIST EXOTICAARTIST`````ChainoALBUM`````Jungle EchoesGENRE`````Exotica, Tribal, Afrobeat, KitschYEAR````````1959SHORT BIO:The self-styled "percussion genius of Africa," exotica-era enigma Chaino was actually born Leon Johnson in Philadelphia in 1927; raised primarily in Chicago, the details of his early life are largely a mystery, although at some point he learned to play the bongos and began touring the so-called "chitlin" circuit of black nightclubs. During the mid-1950s he surfaced in Los Angeles, and with producer Kirby Allan entered the famed Gold Star studio to record a series of otherworldly jungle exotica LPs; the first, the 1958 Verve label release Jungle Mating Rhythms, featured not only a lurid fusion of African rhythms, primal chants and lusty moaning-and-groaning but also liner notes claiming "Chaino is the only survivor of a lost race of people from the wilds of the jungle in a remote part of central Africa where few white men have ever been...(he) could play seven or more drums at the same time, with such a blur of speed that you can hardly see his hands." In the months which followed, Chaino issued three more albums -- Jungle Echoes, Night of the Spectre and Africana -- each for a different label; on occasion, he also worked as a session musician, and even appeared in pair of feature films, Nighttide and The Devil's Hand. A notoriously difficult and eccentric figure, however, in time he and Allan parted ways, and Chaino's activities over the decades to follow remain unknown; with the resurgence of interest in exotica during the mid-1990s, his brother George Johnson discovered the percussionist's whereabouts and briefly brought him back home to Chicago. Chaino nevertheless resumed his nomadic ways soon after; following surgery to remove a brain tumor, he suffered a fatal heart attack on July 8, 1999.DOWNLOADMediafire is givin me a headache with it's upload problems so if there is something wrong with the .zip file please let me know and I'll re-upload it somewhere else.

Billy Karloff and the Extremes - Headbangers 7" [New Window]
Back to the old punk vinyls, and this time the debut single from one of Billy Karloffs incarnations "Billy Karloff and the Extremes". Thanks to 45 Revolutions you can find an excellent synopsis on Billy Karloff and his career here.So you get a decent little rocker and for me the standout track. with the a-side "Headbangers" The b-side "Don't keep me down" sounds very pub rock (not that there's anything wrong with that).Band: Billy Karloff and the ExtremesLabel: Warner BrosYear: 1978Tracks:1. Scott 4 - Your Kingdom To Dust CD Single [New Window]
I think I first heard this on John Peel (I could be wrong) but I went straight out and purchased a copy, and ever since it's been floating in and out of my playlists, and now its back again. Their biography on Amazon labels them as Electronic Cowpunks and you will see why when you listen to both sides of this single and even more when you try some of their albums.Scott 4 must be another one of those bands that regretted the name of their band, especially after considering its the same name as Scott Walkers album "Scott 4". So if you Google them all you see is Scott Walker (not that that's a bad thing), so I guess that explains why in 2005 they renamed themselves to "Scott 4 Free Rock Orchestra".Only two tracks here, first up is "Your Kingdom To Dust" and it's easily the standout track. The b-side "You Set The Scene" is an instrumental that lasts for a mighty 23:15 minutes, and to me, sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a film (what do you think?). Amazingly for such a long track it's very listenable, and after all these years I still haven't grown bored of it.So try it out and see what you think.Band: Scott 4Label: Satellite Records / V2 RecordsYear: 1997Tracks:1. Your Kingdom To Dust2. You Set The SceneRipped form not so glorious CD (see comments for links)If you like this then try out some of their albums. Clockwork Orange - Dramatisation [New Window]
Something a bit different for you this time, a full cast dramatisation (now OOP) of the famous Anthony Burgess novel "Clockwork Orange".Although I like the Kubrick film version, I felt the book was far superior. I remember reading the book in the early seventies as a 13 year old, and very soon after, we managed to get hold of a pirate video version of the film (the film was banned for 27 years in the UK and was very difficult to see until its re-release in 2001) which I couldn't wait to see. Malcolm McDowell was perfect as Alex (the Anti Hero) but for me Kubrick introduced too many of his own scenes and it just didn't work as well as the book (did anyone else feel the same?)SPOILER ALERT (If you haven't read the book or seen the film don't read this bit) In the final chapter I remember smiling (with Alex) that the old Alex was back, and I was surprised that the Author could make you feel empathy for someone as nasty as Alex (again anyone else feel the same?), and the film somehow didn't manage to create that feeling (is that a good or bad thing?).I later on discovered that the book I read had a missing final chapter, which had been removed by the US publishers (Burgess was not 100% behind the chapter removal) who felt the public wouldn't believe a redemption ending with Alex realsiing everything he had done was wrong and preferred the darker ending. I still haven't got round to reading the book as Burgess originally planned (has anyone else read that version? if so what did you think?). By the way Kubrick's film also followed the censored chapter version of the book.SPOILER ALERT FINISH (you can carry on now)The play is an interesting version, again for me the book is still superior but this is well worth a listen. The play also uses the Nadsat language from the book, which is a mixture of Slavic, rhyming slang and some words invented by Burgess. Picking up recent copies of the book I notice the dictionary is not included in many prints, which could make it a little hard work (both my copies have the dictionary so if anyone needs one, then leave a comment), although this play is a bit easier to understand.I originally heard this on Radio 4 and then bought a copy of the cassette a couple of years later. So here it is ripped from glorious hissing tapes (see comments for links).Title: Clockwork OrangeCast: Included on high res scanTracks: 4 parts (taken from each side of the tape - Part 1 and 2 in first rar file, Parts 3 and 4 in second rar file)If you like this then definitely buy the book (try and get a copy with the dictionary in the back: A Clockwork Orange (Essential Penguin)This secondhand version for only 5 pence, definitely does have a dictionary: A Clockwork Orange Or if you can't be bothered to read (shame on you) the listen to the audio book: A Clockwork Orange (BBC Radio Collection) Then try out Kubrick's classic film: A Clockwork Orange (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [1971]and if you enjoy the soundtrack then get this as well: Clockwork Orange (Carlos) (Bonus Tracks)

Coldplay Viva La Vida Tour!

Gang Of Four - Mothers - Chicago - 09-09-1979 Repost [New Window]
Well I've said it before, this is what I love about the internet. You can post what you think is right, but you can be sure if it isn't, someone will tell you. The strange thing is that I mentioned at the beginning of the first post that this gig was at Mothers in Chicago, and then got confused with discussion over at Pamplemoose, and the rips were all titled NYC. I should of worked it out, but oh well thanks to Scott we now have confirmation and evidence.Scott (from Chicago) left the following comment:FYI, the Gang of Four show on 9/9/79 was at Mothers in Chicago."I was at that show and still have the ticket stub. Gang of Four was the opening act with The Buzzcocks headlining that evening. The ticket was $7.00. Everyone expected a great show from The Buzzcocks, and they delivered just that, but the general consensus was that the Gang of Four were even better."and to prove it, he even sent a scan of the original ticket (I thought I was a hoarder). Now I can't be arsed to re-up the songs with the correct album title, so I'll leave it to you to correct. If I get some time I will redo the cover. So big thanks to Scott for the correction. As usual I'll leave the original post below:ORIGINAL POSTMothers still exists and has been located at 26 W. Division St in Chicago since around 1968.If you haven't already got this one, you're in for a real treat. All of the early Gang Of Four classics are here (well all my favourites are) and in pretty good quality for such an old recording. If you've seen this live bootleg around, you may have seen the attached notes which states that the venue location is disputed, and suggests it could either be the Bottom Line or Mothers, and you will find both said bootlegs with identical tracks. I checked over at Pamplemoose and you can see Dave Allen's reply to this dispute here (scroll down to the bottom of the comments). So the dispute is resolved, its Mothers NYC on the 09/09/79.I've had this on my play list for the last three weeks, and no signs of removing it yet, for me these songs are timeless and still sound as fresh today as they did in 78-79. So what are you waiting for go and get them. If you have any trouble with any of the tracks you can find them individually posted along with some excellent new Gang of Four recordings over at Pamplemoose here (you may have to do a few searches to find them all). The cover is another one of my homemade attempts. Does anyone recognise the cover? Theres a "no prize" (well a little Kudos for knowing your Gang of Four) for anyone who leaves a comment to say which cover it was taken from.1. Ultravox - Detroit Michigan. March 8, 1979 + KROQ Interview 16/03/79 [New Window]
The fifth and final Ultravox live gig from their final 1979 (US) tour. This one also includes a radio interview with the band. Kindly donated again by John Headland, so you can also find a FLAC rip over at Dime. Not one of the best recordings but it's definitely listenable. The interview starts very quiet (even the DJ says so), so stick with it.The set list is now a familiar one, but if you love Ultravox, you're want it.So that's me cleaned out for Ultravox stuff, although there is some John Foxx bootlegs to come.Band: UltravoxAlbum: Detroit Michigan. 25 Most popular albums on bleeding panda blog [New Window]
Here are 25 most popular albums from this blog. I am surprised that one of my earliest compilations is by far the most downloaded item here. I am not particularly happy with the Before Sleep compilation because when I listen it now it seems at some moments a bit cheesy (Landscapes is my dearest) but people seem to like it a lot. Also, a surprising entry is the Black Devil Disco Club album. It definitely seems now that it is gaining huge popularity as more people discover and stick to it.01 V.A. Clark - Totems Flare (2009) [New Window]
POWER OF TEXTURE ARTIST`````ClarkALBUM`````Totems FlareGENRE`````ElectronicYEAR````````2009ALBUM REVIEW by Brian Howe: Think about the basic properties of beat-oriented electronic music. It emphasizes dynamic action, feelings of speed, impressions of light-- extremes and intricacies of sensation. It tweaks your senses with creative deformations of time and space, with strictly engineered frameworks lurking beneath sleek or gaudy facades. And as Simon Reynolds credibly argued in Energy Flash/Generation Ecstasy, it strives to create experiences instead of describing them. Doesn't it sound a lot like the state fair, and make it seem crazy that tinny speakers still blast mostly rock, rap, and country hits across the rides? Imagine Lindstrm's slopes and plunges on your roller coaster; the Field's nested spins on the Tilt-A-Whirl. In an obscure corner of the midway, Chris Clark mans the funhouse. He lays out certain conditions-- dark twisty passageways, treacherous stairs, and moving platforms-- but doesn't suggest that you experience them in any particular way. His songs are divided into bizarre chambers of clashing design. He's the rare case where a heavy-handedly metaphorical approach like this seems defensible. In interviews, Clark holds forth at length on process and ideas while neatly sidestepping taxonomical points. He has his go-to tricks: His specialty is the cataclysmic anthem, cobbled together from homemade break beats, glitchy jags of Euro- and acid-house, pockets of concussive noise, honeycombed synth lines, and contoured masses of distortion, all piled up in lunging heaps of coarse texture. He really doesn't seem to make any type of music, which means that there's no background proposition or guideline, and metaphor might be the only way to talk about it. As in the funhouse, you have to make your own way through. Clark's voice works best when he uses it like just another sound source; say, as a stuttering, FX-laden pulse in "Look Into the Heart Now". Your attention is drawn to details like this because the compositions often feel under-imagined as songs. The aforementioned tracks make the first half of the album feel jumbled and cluttered. The fizzy syncopation of opener "Outside Plume" is enticing, but its lumbering synths and beat-dropping tangents thwart its momentum. Things do start coming together after the utilitarian vamp "Luxman Furs": "Totem Crackerjack" uses gusts of noise to enhance, not derail, its cadence, and has a confidently measured stride that carries it intelligibly from breakneck drums to delicate arpeggios. The home stretch has a satisfying continuity-- the revved-up but beatific "Future Daniel" runs into the rewinding ambiance of "Primary Balloon Landing"; the dark drive of "Talis" and "Suns of Temper" dissolves into the gentle guitar whorls of closer "Absence". That's how funhouses are supposed to work-- we know the chaos is an illusion, designed for our enjoyment by an orderly hand. Otherwise, they're just confusing and enervating. Ultravox - Paradise Theatre, Boston: March 3rd 1979 [New Window]
Number three of five, and the second night at the Paradise Theatre in Boston.Although this one is not the same quality as the previous radio recording it's well worth having, as it contains the first airing and recording of the song "Radio Beach" (which I don't think is available on any studio recording - anyone?). This version is a little ramshackle but if you do like it, there's a better version coming in the next post.So leave a comment and tell ASFM what you think of Radio Beach, and the rest of this gig.Band: UltravoxYear: 1979Album: Live at the Paradise Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, March 3rd 1979Tracks:1. Shrink - Valid Or Void Repost [New Window]
This is a repost due to Dave who has kindly sent his memories and some excellent photographs of Shrink in concert.Below are some of Daves words and also now added his pics (this link has higher resolution copies):The pics of Shrink are from a gig in London about 1979. I remember the gig very well because Ian Dury was in the audience! The place was full of punks. When Shrink came on stage the punks got on the floor and began to bow down (has anyone seen anything like that!). It's hard to believe that this guy didn't make it big! I suppose this guy was way ahead of his time! I mean Prodigy nicked a lot of Shrink's stuff (sorry Prodigy fans - but you would have loved Shrink). I also remember Peter Gabriel nicking Shrink's lyrics! Listen to the end of Sledge Hammer (lyrics nicked from You Chauffeur Me)ORIGINAL POSTStrange one this, I don't know much about Shrink and as far as I am aware this was his only single (now someones gonna prove me wrong again, but it's all about the learning, right). The a-side 'Valid or Void' is a bit of an oddity but a real little New Wave gem. Then you play the b-side and think "what the hell is this" (it doesn't work for me but I included it for completeness) So try it for yourself and leave a comment to tell me what you think.Anyone know anything else about Shrink?A nice little etching on this one "Shrink or Swim".Band: ShrinkLabel: A&MYear: 1979Tracks:1. Ultravox - Paradise Theatre, Boston: March 2nd 1979 [New Window]
Number two (of 5) and this one is from an FM radio show (London Wavelength Concert Hour), not sure why it's called London as its a US show (anyone know more?) and is therefore very good quality. So you're gonna like this one.I think, I've said it all about Ultravox and John Foxx (I have some good Foxx live gigs coming soon to), so just get that link and listen to their brilliance.I won't even ask for you to leave a comment, but it would be nice if you did.Band: UltravoxYear: 1979Album: Live at the Paradise Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, March 2nd 1979Tracks:1. Ultravox - Philadelphia Hot Club 23/02/1979 [New Window]
This is the first of five quality bootlegs from the final tour of a John Foxx led Ultravox. This one comes from John Headland (and for you audiophiles you can find his flac rips over at "Dime" - I would rip in flac if I could play them on my mobile devices, but until then ASFM's gonna carry on with mp3).This final tour was apparently self funded and just after Island records dropped them post the release of their classic "Systems Of Romance" album (can anyone confirm this?). What were Island records thinking? they gave them three classic albums, more than many others have ever achieved and then they dumped them. You also get a first taste of John Foxx's solo material. "He's a liquid" was never officially recorded by Ultravox and was eventually released on John Foxx's debut solo album "Metamatic".The two final two tracks have been added to John's rips and came from Alyn over at punkrockposters.com, the intro and outro for each track is a little clipped, but all the music is still there, and considering one of the tracks is "Young Savage", you can't complain.Did you ge to see John Foxx with Ultravox? If so what did you think? Leave a comment and don't forget to thank John for sharing this great rip.Band: UltravoxAlbum: Live at Philadelphia Hot Club 23/02/79Year: 1979Tracks:1. The Mekons - John Peel Session #1 11/07/1978 [New Window]
The first John Peel session for "The Mekons" included six perfect examples of the early Mekons sounds. Although I am a big Mekons fan and have most of their material, this was my favourite period. The session includes another version of their brilliant and timeless single "Where Were You?" which for me is also the standout track of the session, even though all of the other tracks are excellent. The Mekons catalogue is an amazing variation of genres from classic punk, to dance to alt country and a few that it would be difficult to classify. So what's your favourite Mekons period? I'm still with their material released on Fast Records but I have to say I also love Oooh! (Out of their Heads) with the classic tracks "Dancing In My Head" and "Thee Olde Trip To Jerusalem" . Leave a comment and let ASFM know what you think?Band: The MekonsYear: 1978Label: John Peel SessionsTracks:1. Garden Fence of Sound2. Where Were You?3. Letters In The Post4. Lonely and Wet5. Steel Pulse - Nyah Love 7" [New Window]
The second single from Steel Pulse was released on Anchor records in 1977, and I'm sure if this had been released post their debut album "Handsworth Revolution" it would of been a hit. This is the single that got me into Steel Pulse, and if you haven't heard it before you're understand why. I'm not sure why they never tried to reissue it, when they did become more popular (does anyone know?). Their following releases were all on Island records, so maybe it was down to ownership. The b-side is a traditional dub version of the a-side, even though I'm not a big dub fan, this one also works for me.So give it a try and see whether you agree this should of been a hit.Band: Steel PulseLabel: AnchorYear: 1977Tracks:1. Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid (2009) [New Window]
ORGANIC RIFFS AND A FAMILIAR MOAN ARTIST`````Dan AuerbachALBUM`````Keep It HidGENRE`````Indie Rock, Alternative, Punk BluesYEAR````````2009ALBUM REVIEW by Sean Murphy : Auerbach never seems to be straining himself or merely appropriating other, signature sounds just for the sake of doing so. The music he has so obviously, and voraciously, absorbed makes him who he is, pure and simple. For instance, on Mean Monsoon his voice is a chemical snarl that seems a bit like Peter Green filtered through early, dirty Junior Wells. The music is reminiscent of vintage Yardbirds, complete with tambourine tapping and chorus-crashing bongo flourishes. When I Left the Room features his now patented paranoid snarl, propelled by guitars that seethe behind a banjo (!) march. It is not unlike the best Black Keys material, with all the obvious and not-so-obvious influences on the surface, unfolding into something startling original. His voice, which at times is able to convey a pained vulnerability offset by a gruff, even defiant resolve, has improved with each album. On Whispered Words, possibly the best thing Auerbach has achieved to this point, all of his skills are on display: the opening build-up is Motown without the horns, with subdued guitar weaving around his plaintive vocals. As the song gathers steam, suddenly it takes a detour from Detroit and heads south into Stax territory, sans the crackerjack studio musicians. It is astounding that these very unique and even sacrosanct sounds are being incorporated in a fashion that manages to feel unforced and even organic.Read the full review:http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/70150-dan-auerbach-keep-it-hid/DOWNLOAD

Herbie Hancock - Gershwin's World (1998) [New Window]
CLASSY ARTIST`````Herbie HancockALBUM`````From Bleep To BleepGENRE`````Jazz, Post BopYEAR````````1998ALBUM REVIEW by Jim Newsom: Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings to become a first-class jazz singer in her own right. Stevie Wonder's unmistakable harmonica complements Mitchell's singing on "Summertime" and shares lead instrument space with his own voice on the W.C. Handy classic "St. Louis Blues." Jazzman extraordinaire Wayne Shorter smokes a solo spot on Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail" and carves out some space for his soprano saxophone in the midst of "Summertime." A number of the young lions of jazz are featured on various cuts, and Herbie's old pal Chick Corea joins the leader for a piano duet of James P. Johnson's "Blueberry Rhyme." Gershwin's wonderful, extended "Lullaby" finds Hancock teamed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, as does an attractive arrangement of a "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" by Maurice Ravel, whose jazz influence can be heard on the piece. In addition, one of the most beautiful tracks on the album places star soprano Kathleen Battle's voice at the forefront of Gershwin's own "Prelude in C# Minor." Yet with all the fine performances by his guests, Gershwin's World remains Hancock's show, and he plays magnificently throughout. From beautiful to funky, percussive to melodic, improvisational to tightly arranged, Hancock and cohorts take a wondrous journey through the music and world of Gershwin.DOWNLOAD

The Micronauts - From Bleep to Bleep (2000) [New Window]
NO BULLSHIT HEREARTIST`````The MicronautsALBUM`````From Bleep To BleepGENRE`````Techno, HouseYEAR````````2000WHY?I've heard this album a week ago for the first time and was blown away. This is one of the rawest, fearless tech-house albums ever. For the fullest effect listen on some bigass headphones.ALBUM REVIEW: The title of the Micronauts' (mini-)LP debut is just as good as any, considering all but one of the songs feature "bleep" in the title, and there's a four-part series entitled "Baby Wants to Bleep." It's also completely in keeping with the duo's aesthetic, which injects a sense of humor and off-hand charm into the often sterile and increasingly academic field of acid techno. They function as a near-perfect incarnation of classic acid acts like Altern-8 or the KLF, both of whom produced great music but also recognized and exploited, for comic effect, Britain's acid revolution during the early '90s. With all the mayhem and track-to-track flow of the best hip-hop DJs (even though they're performing on 303s and 909s instead of turntables), the Micronauts tear their way through squelchy acid hysteria and continually test the upper limits of the frequency range. Though most of the humor is inherent in the track titles, the music is so kinetic that it's easy to envision Monier and Issakidis smirking behind their boxes even as they were programming the album. Except for the heavily processed freeform-electronics piece ("Bleeper 0+2") that cuts the album in two, Bleep to Bleep offers plenty of tweaked acid patterns and quite a few trips through heavy reverb.DOWNLOAD

Wild Willy Barrett - We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place 7" [New Window]
Hi everyone, back again, I've been too busy the last month and had zero opportunity to do anything on ASFM,but it's nearly the Xmas holidays so normal service should be resumed.Back to good old 7" vinyl singles, and this one's a decent cover of the Animal's classic "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place" from "Wild Willy Barrett" who is better known for his partnership with "John Otway". The b-side is a nice bit of blues guitar, unsurprisingly named "Barrettt's Blues". Barrett and Otway have produced a fair back catalogue of music which is unknown to most people, so hopefully this post will encourage you to try the excellent Anthology you can find at the link below. The b-sides not on it, so for the completest, no need to worry.Artist: Wild Willy BarrettYear: 1981Label: Black Eye RecordsTracks:1. We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place2. KLING KLANG, KLING KLANG, KLING KLANG, ARTIST`````KraftwerkALBUM`````Tour de France SoundtracksGENRE`````ElectronicYEAR````````2003WHY:I am sure that most of the people fiddling around electronic music surely have this glorious album but since I find it to be one of the best electronic albums of this decade I just had to post it.In short, this album was a slap in the face to the entire electronic scene (and wider) when it came out because Kraftwerk were (at that time) a hugely respected visionary act but - they were an 80's gem. Yes, they created and influenced every corner of music as much as The Beatles did but from the trendy critics narrow eyes they were simply - retro (I tend to disagree with this because when you listen to their 80's stuff it still sounds much fresher and open than everything that came out after them). Of course Daft Punk, Autechre and the whole techno movement gang updated their style (and the English accent) for 90's clubbers in dire need of something punchy and raw but nobody really expected something new from the Kings of Robots. No matter how much I explore the endless possibilities of electronic musicians I always feel like sitting on a pile of Kraftwerk records while doing that. I wonder how does it feel when you ARE electronic music.Short review:The seeming ease with which the group unselfconsciously effects a seamless transition from its prior recordings to its latest creates the impression that the band cryogenically froze itself for seventeen years and then immediately re-entered a newly equipped digital studio.http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/kraftwerk/tour-de-france-soundtracks.htm DOWNLOADAlso, be aware of this:Finally, after cancellation and consternation Kraftwerks back catalog gets remastered and reissuedWe think its whisper better than the Beatles.I was very surprised reading that Kraftwerk made this album completely in a software based studio using Cubase and lots of software effects. This is quite a big change considering their long history as hardware pioneers. Read a short interview about the software used on this album.

Carter USM - Norwich Sound City 1992 [New Window]
I'm not sure how popular Carter USM (originally Unstoppable Sex Machine but shortened later on) were globally (be interesting to hear from some of our overseas ASFM visitors), but for me they were definitely one of those classic UK eccentrics, and I can't describe them any better than this entry from Wikipedia: a distinctive style of power pop, fusing samples, sequenced basses and drum machines with rock 'n' roll guitars and off-beat wordplay-loaded lyrics As you can hear on the rip, their fans would continually chant "You Fat Bastard" which originated from one time manager Jon 'Fat' Breasts topless on stage band introductions. A good selection of their singles and favourites here, unfortunately Sheriff Fatman is clipped at the end. It also includes their single "After The Watershed" (1991) which led to their first appearance on 'Top Of The Pops and then more famously a legal battle with the Rolling Stones publisher over the the use of the lyrics "Goodbye Rudy Tuesday" in the chorus. I'm not sure whether the legal battle was resolved by 1992, but introduce the song with "this ones for the bah bah bab bab the Rolling Stones, but we didn't want to swear". Band: Carter USMAlbum: Radio 1 Norwich Sound City 1992Year: 1992Tracks:1. Intro Robin Hood2. The Only Living Boy In New Cross3. Down The Tracks4. Rubbish5. Do Re Me, So Far So Good6. Brian James - Why? Why? Why? 7" [New Window]
Like many bloggers I sometimes start to think, I can't be arsed with this anymore, and maybe I should kill the blog of, and then out of the blue, you get an email from someone saying, "I thought you might like these...." and attached is Brian James second single (a and b side) Why? Why? Why? and then you think, this is why I blog. The sharing, and helping people (including myself) to find new music still gives me a buzz.So give a big thanks in the comments to Styreneboy, who shared this hard to find single (well after much searching I couldn't find it anywhere)Released on green and black vinyl in 1982 on Illegal Records. You get two tracks, with the a-side Why? Why? Why? clearly being the stand out track. It's just what you expect from Brian James, great guitar riffs and a great catchy tune (this one will stick in your head for a while). The b-side "Where Did I Find A Girl Like You" is OK, but James has done much better.Artist: Brian JamesLabel: Illegal RecordsYear: 1982Tracks:1. Why? Why? Why?2. Where Did I Find A Girl Like YouRipped from Styreneboy's glorious scratched vinyl (see comment for links)If you like this then you can still buy some of Brian James albums here, and they are worth getting: The Brian James Gangand you can get this one in the traders area for an amazing 1.23 (I got my copy last week) two CD's, one of the album and the second is the "Dripping Lips" album (of course featuring Brian James) here: Brian James

King - John Peel Sessions 11/07/78 [New Window]
This was requested by Roberto in the comments of the Tanz Der Youth John Peel Sessions, and as Kes kindly pointed out, you can find this plus some more good stuff at Rare Punk To Share blog here (First time I've seen this blog and it looks good). Now I'm also posting this as another ASFM visitor Pepe from Ireland, who also provided the excellent Vinchucas demos (if you haven't heard these then try them out here) sent these to me sometime ago and I've been planning on posting them for ages. I don't know which rip is the better (or even if they are the same) but I'll leave it up to you to get them from wherever you want.So for those of you who don't know, King was the band briefly (2 Months - from June 78 to August 78) formed by Captain Sensible between the period the Damned split up and then reformed. In this period the only recording they made were these John Peel sessions. As usual four tracks, and in my opinion two gems and two average tracks. Anti Pope (later resurrected by the Damned) and Jet Boy Jet Girl (an Elton Motello original) are classics and you will love them.Band: KingYear: 1978Album: John Peel SessionsTracks:1. Anti Pope2. Readymades - Terry Is A Space Cadet 7" [New Window]
Would you believe it! another gem from Bruce Rhodes, and I know he's been searching for this one for sometime now. Now he's finally got a copy you can see why.The "Readymades" from San Fransisco, and we think this is their one and only single (Bruce has found reference to another 12" single, but he's not sure it's the same band, maybe some of our more learned visitors will know), which considering how brilliant it's a shames they didn't release anything else. They do have a new album out now, see bottom of post for more info.Released in 1977 on the Automatic label it contains three tracks, first up is the a-side "Terry Is A Space Cadet", and using Bruce's own words (which I have to agree with) "I love its slightly fragile Velvet Underground feel". The b-side has two tracks, and there both excellent, your going to love the quirky "Supergirl" and the ridcuously catchy "Electric Toys".So if anyone knows anymore about the Readymades then leave a commennt, and don't forgot to leave thanks to Bruce for sharing this one.Band: ReadymadesYear: 1977Label: AutomaticTracks:1. Terry Is A Space Cadet2. Supergirl3. Electric ToysRipped from Bruce's glorious scratched vinyl (see comment for link)If you like this then they do have a new album out, which you can find in the right hand sidebar here. I did try to take a look and see what's on this album but couldn't get anymore info. The link is worth following for some other intresting old Punk and new wave albums on a new label called Rave-Up Records. You can also hear a few more Readymades gems here at their myspace site.

Boredoms - 77 Boadrum (2007) [New Window]
BOILING POINTARTIST`````BOREDOMSALBUM`````77 BOADRUMGENRE`````EXPERIMENTAL, NOISE-ROCKYEAR````````2007FROM WIKI: 77 Boadrum was a concert held on July 7, 2007 (7/7/07) at 7:07 PM consisting of 77 drummers. The concert was organized by Boredoms. The title of the concert was a portmanteau of "Boredoms", "boa", "drum", and "77". It was held at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, New York. Two followup concerts, entitled 88 Boadrum, were held on August 8, 2008.THE CONCERT FROM NY ENTERTAINMENT: For such a monstrous event, the ending of the Boredoms' 77BoaDrum show in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday evening was surprisingly peaceful. Led by the Japanese noise-rock pioneers, BoaDrum presented 77 drummers at 77 drum kits spread out across a broad green lawn. In addition to the Boredoms at the center of the spiral, drummers from dozens of indie-rock and jazz bands participated; even Andrew WK was there, sitting behind a gleaming gold drum kit and playing as if he wanted you to enjoy the show as much as he himself was, which seemed to be quite a lot.Read more: 77 Drums With a Dragon Charmer in the Middle -- Vulture http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/07/77_drums_with_a_dragon_charmer.html#ixzz0WH9AbxPK DRUMMERS: Entries in bold denote drum leaders. V.A. BLEEDING TECHNO SERIES VOL.01 - EVOLVING TUNNELS (2009) [New Window]
ELECTRONIC!ARTIST`````VARIOUSALBUM`````BLEEDING TECHNO SERIES VOL.01 - EVOLVING TUNNELSGENRE`````TECHNO, MINIMAL, DETROIT, ELECTRO, PROGRESSIVE,BERLINYEAR````````2009BLEEDING PANDA COMPILATION!WHAT?For some time now I wanted to share some great techno/house/electro tracks I enjoyed but they were either to "4x4 clubby" for my compilations or simply long beatport frenzy club mixes and did not fit at all. So I decided to start regularly releasing compilations of just kool danceable club sounds overlooking their genres or bpm's.Basically here are some older classics (Joey Beltram) blended with some fresh 2009 productions (Dusty Kid). As usual, this compilation is a bit awkward and doesn't function as a mix. Each song is pretty much for itself. As promised in the Naked compilation, here is the futuristic original Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bop track. Standouts are definitely "Evolver", a storming surgeon precession minimal techno, Dusty Kid's flawless travelogue "Cowboys", DJ Hell's apocalyptic romantic "The Angst" from the over-promoted "Teufelswerk" album, Gatto Fritto's kitsch love affair "Invisible College" and one of the best produced Detroit electro tracks of all time "LBLB Detroit" from Jimmy Edgar. Pay attention to the sound panoramic quality of "LBLB Detroit" and turn up your volume as much as possible. Also, I should mention Detroit's second wave artist Kenny Larkin and his obscure and amazing "Vibin" - listen to the brilliant progressive bassline at 2:50.Also, can someone recognize the theme melody in "I Am Plankton"??? It's killing me that I know it in the back of my mind, I know it's a classic theme but can't remember what it is...TRACKLIST:01 Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bop (Original Mix) (1999)02 Peter Horrevorts - Evolver (2007)03 Joey Beltram - Drome (1994)04 Mike Monday - I Am Plankton (Album Version 2008)05 Guy Gerber - Belly Dancing (Album Version 2007)06 Dusty Kid - Cowboys (Extended Version 2009)07 Petar Dundov - Waterfall (2008)08 Dj Hell - The Angst (2009)09 Jimmy Edgar - LBLB Detroit (2006)10 Kenny Larkin - Vibin' (2008)11 Gatto Fritto - Invisible College (2007)12 Spirit Catcher - Hidden Memories (2007)DOWNLOAD

D. LISSVIK - 7 TRX + INTERMISSION (2008) [New Window]
STUDIO'S DAN LISSVIK SOLO PROJECTARTIST`````D. LISSVIKALBUM`````7 TRX + INTERMISSIONGENRE`````EXPERIMENTAL, DUB, FUSION, EASYYEAR````````2008FROM:This album was recommended by Alisa from Norway. ALBUM REVIEW FROM RESIDENT ADVISOR: As half of Sweden's foremost Balearic revivalists Studio, Dan Lissvik's already well known for poolside dance music that's more horizontally than vertically designed. But where Yearbook 1 and this year's remix collection Yearbook 2 found shape around the duo's bouncy, dub-infected rhythms, Lissvik's debut solo album 7 Trx + Intermission is, fittingly, more a one-man quest: a work intent on musically recreating a sense of beatific solitude. Without vocals and with track numbers over titles, Lissvik foregoes Studio's emphasis on trance-clatter and repetition. In their place are rippling Factory Records guitars, the barest rhythms and a decidedly Eastern-influenced spiritualism, making for an album that nurtures the spare and serene. He draws shapes and symbols in the sand out of lean, serpentine guitars, each open to the listener's angle of sight. Without partner Rasmus Hgg's synth shading, Lissvik's imagery is fit more for the desert than the beach, designed around great clean spaces without people or moving things to distract, just sound and silence in an odd tandem. Despite the emphasis on his ruminative side though, Lissvik hasn't completely neglected his band's taste for big-eyed joy. The album's longest excursion, "A3," shifts from boat holiday guitars into a breezy freeway spin atop hand drums and brawny bass, while "A4" makes easy Saturday night disco out of electronic piano and jaunty wood-cowbell rhythms, a kind of polyester anthem as cheap and delightfully fruitful as its opening chords suggest. "B2" best resembles Studio's knack for the hypnotic strut though; Lissvik filters quiet Eastern tones into a wanderer's dance jam, alternating the dim and contemplative with a more open-collared bass heavy approach. But it's clear that Lissvik's relying on open-vista psychedelia to carry the mood for most of 7 Trx + Intermission. "A1" turns a Spanish guitar intro into a curtain parting for a Sergio Leone filmone of the tense train depot scenes before all hell breaks loosewhile "A2" is dressed in enough vague mysticism and candle-lit ambience for an early Doors track. "B1" makes for a kind of mystical Bazaar interlude, swapping out Villalobos' ethnic playgrounding for more solitary spoils. Blending tropical bird noises and what sound like sampled hand-drum patterns into a calm morning alarm that might gently coax you from your sleep, it's "B3" that generates quite a spell for such short length. For a member of a band that's always relied so heavily on the intoxication of repetition, this assured short-form design sometimes feels like a welcome new direction. After all: Yearbook 3 is probably still at least a year away. While we wait, Lissvik's solo debut marks not so much a holding pattern as a distraction well worth our winter attention on its own.DOWNLOAD

HENRI TEXIER - AMIR (1996) [New Window]
FRENCH MASTER OF BASSARTIST`````HENRI TEXIERALBUM`````AMIRGENRE`````POST-JAZZ SOMETHING, EXPERIMENTAL, FUSIONYEAR````````1996ABOUT:Henri Texier is an outstanding French bassist who has concentrated most of his activity in his native land. This intricate, gentle album is definitely one of his greatest works.I can't find a decent amount of information anywhere on this album but I can surely recommend it.Enjoy.Henri Texier has a strongly physical approach to the bass, although his tone is often described as "bell-like." American auditors may feel that Texier simply walks a crooked line between hard bop and free, but in France Texier has gained recognition for his work in developing a type of jazz that is uniquely French and not beholden to American models. In June 2001, Texier was made a Chevalier of the l'Ordre National de la Lgion d'Honneur, the highest honor the French government accords to its artists.DOWNLOAD

V.A. SOUNDTRACK FOR NAKED RUNNERS (2009) [New Window]
ENJOY YOUR BODYARTIST`````VARIOUSALBUM`````SOUNDTRACK FOR NAKED RUNNERSGENRE`````FUNK, JAZZ, NERDY, INSTRUMENTAL, RETRO, TRIPPYYEAR````````2009BLEEDING PANDA COMPILATION!WHAT?Some anonymous user here posed a challenge with a theme of naked running (he or she wanted it to be with some water sprinkles or something) but this name seemed a bit shorter and simpler. Also, someone criticized him/her for that, but I thought it was a ridiculous idea that should be definitely done. As it turned out, this is one of my catchiest compilations, but feel free to criticize it.Now, it's filled with french perverse 70's LSD funk, some monstrous jazz + samba flipouts, several cult and very influental songs mixed with ridicule of The Beatles and the non-existent hippie-parody Dewey Cox himself. This small collection went through some big changes over time. At first, I made it the most obvious way - indie experiments with japanese and NY noise bands (OOIOO, Optimo, Pullsallama etc.) but that was simply to simple, raw and it was'nt "romantic" and humorous enough. So I basically shifted entirely from that direction into sex, retro, french, jazz, kinky, ridiculous direction and tried to make a sort of a "soundtrack" that is not that tough at rhythm but more into the freedom loving atmosphere of the swinging sex organs .Standout tracks, and maybe tracks that make this comp a must have (for those who never heard them before) are definitely: the gorgeous and life-fulfiling, jamming Andrew Bird's Coney Island Shuffle, Janko Nilovic's by far the best composition Xenos Cosmos from 1972 (the last 1 minute of the song is golden and the rest of his work is mostly crap), magickal Senor Coconut's - Rydeen, of course Serge Gainsbourg's cult classic Bonnie and Clyde, Sohail Rana's Soul Sitar - a perverse take on bollywood humour (Guys from Ninja Tune label had lots of fun remixing this gem) and the infinite Piggies - spitting humour from The Beatles. Also, I should mention Marsha Hunt with her nipple shaking (Oh No! Not) The Beast Day, a strangely missed groovy 70's funk club hit.Enjoy this comp, leave a comment and maybe some ideas, links, whatever. I am always looking for new material to fuse.TRACKLIST:01 Medeski Martin & Wood - Pat A Cake (2008)02 RJD2 - 197603 The Pinker Tones - L'Heros (2006)04 Serge Gainsbourg - Bonnie and Clyde05 Georges Garvarentz - Nues Dans L'eau (1970)06 Sohail Rana - Soul Sitar (1970)07 Marsha Hunt - The Beast Day (1973)08 Paul McCartney - Coming Up (Thumbs Aloft Edit 2007) M09 The Mystic Moods - Honey Trippin' (1975)10 The Delfonics - Funny Feeling (1971)11 Os Mutantes - A Minha Menina M12 Andrew Bird's Bowl Of Fire - Coney Island Shuffle (1999)13 The Beatles - Piggies (1968)14 Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story - Black Sheep (2007)15 Der Dritte Raum - Swing Bop B (2008)16 Senor Coconut and His Orchestra - Rydeen (2008)17 G. STUDIO - YEARBOOK 1 (2007) [New Window]
HUGE FIELDS OF POSSIBILITYARTIST`````STUDIOALBUM`````YEARBOOK 1GENRE`````EXPERIMENTAL, ELECTRONICA, FUSIONYEAR````````2007 WHY:Much has been said about this album but I've decided to post it anyway since it's a must listen for all who missed it in 2007.A gorgeous pice of effort from Sweden.ALBUM REVIEW: (pitchfork)Never put stock in MySpace genre tags, but the page for Sweden's Studio says "Experimental/Afro-beat/Pop" and that's a decent start. It's vague enough for almost anything to happen, but with one specific reference point that pushes expectations in an interesting direction. The band consists of just two people, Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hgg, though they do a nice job of sounding much bigger.A lot happens in 70 minutes, as Studio basically functions in two modes. Much of the time they work in long form, winding melodic guitar lines around a core of clean, hypnotic rhythm. During these tracks they explore the trance-inducing repetition of Manuel Gttsching and gossamer lyricism of Durutti Column, and underpin the development with rhythms that allude to Can or the exotic tinge of Bill Laswell's Sacred System. Hard to say exactly how serious the "Afro-beat" mention on the MySpace page is, but it's not hard to hear the folding-in-on-itself quality of King Sunny Ade's guitar in something like the 13-minute "Life's a Beach!". There's even a hint of Nordic space disco in the reserved, easy funkiness of the gently modulating instrumental "Radio Edit".As an album, it's long and all over the place, but somehow tight and disciplined; it feels like one unit working through various ideas and finding new ways for them to hang together. Subtle humor, both in the music and presentation, also helps keep the record afloat. All titles are in English but they're delivered with a playful twist. "West Side" alludes to Studio's hometown of Gothenburg, located on Sweden's left shore. "Life's a Beach!" is hopelessly goofy, but the music behind it is astonishing.DOWNLOAD

CHRISTIAN PROMMER'S DRUMLESSON - DRUM LESSON VOL.01 (2009) [New Window]
GOOD CLASSICS COVER WORK.ARTIST`````CHRISTIAN PROMMER'S DRUMLESSONALBUM`````DRUM LESSON VOL.01GENRE`````JAZZ, FUNK, COVERYEAR````````2009 ALBUM REVIEW: (by soul seduction)For part one of the the two DRUMLESSON albums, that CHRISTIAN PROMMER has planned to produce, he recorded 10 of his favourite dance classics as jazz interpretations. Taking his favorite dance tracks of the last two decades and transforming the energy and magic of the originals into a performance of a jazz quartet (piano, drums, perc. and bass) was quite an interesting journey for the composer/producer. All started with the idea to record an acoustic version of the DERRICK MAY classic Strings of Life to warm up for the production of his first solo album. He recorded the basic idea some time ago in his new studio on the country side near Munich. Upright piano played by ROBERTO DI GIOIA and drums by WOLFGANG HAFFNER. Thought of as a "one-off" track for the fun of it, it sat on the shelf for a long time until ALEX BARCK of the JAZZANOVA crew, came by and heard the track. Alex and the rest of the crew got so excited about this tune, playing it in their dj sets all over the world, that they soon decided to release a 12" with this track. Released in May 2007 it was a fast spreading phenomenon. Djs and music fans from all sides of the spectrum got into this track. DERRICK MAY also gave CHRISTIAN PROMMER his thumbs up. Nice. The idea of rerecording dance classics did not leave CHRISTIAN PROMMERs head while he was preparing his debut album for Sonar Kollektiv. Feeling at home in the world between Jazz and Detroit Techno he decided to do an album project that had two parts. Vol. 1 reinterprets the dance classics in a jazzy fashion arranging and producing the record in an oldschool way. On Vol. 1 the track listing features tunes that CHRISTIAN PROMMER played in his dj-set at one point in his more than ten year long Dj journey. DOWNLOAD

RICARDO VILLALOBOS - FABRIC 36 (2007) [New Window]
SUPERB, MINIMAL, ARTCY, CLUBBY.ARTIST`````RICARDO VILLALOBOSALBUM`````FABRIC 36GENRE`````MINIMAL, TECHNO YEAR````````2007UH:A stylish mix of top notch minimalism. YummY:P Good stuff.ALBUM REVIEW: (PITCHFORK)Fabric 36 is Villalobos' ravenously awaited mix CD, and it just happens to be blended entirely from his own new productions and remixes. These cut-and-paste percussion clinics would be already straining with detail as stand-alone tracks, but their interlocking beats become ever more complex in the virtuoso way Villalobos meshes them, as when the opening electronic tones of "Groove 1880" sprout acoustic cymbal accents and jazz snares nine minutes later during "Moongomery". The hyper-percussive top end of the mix is perpetually bustling, too: Peppering his tracks with preverbal hiccups, askew extraneous rhythms, and halting half-melodies is one of Villalobos' favorite (and most effective) tricks throughout Fabric 36-- both for keeping the listener engaged and for lending his music its trademark uneasy quality. Phantom voices are layered into bad-trip swirls on "Organic Tranceplant" and "Fumiyandric 2". Strange sizzling noises flare up during an otherwise austere drum track. Fabric 36 constantly slips and slides around multiple percussive pulses, yet remains utterly sensual.DOWNLOAD

ANDREW BIRD'S - OH THE GRANDEUR (1999) [New Window]
HOT FUSION.ARTIST`````ANDREW BIRD'S BOWL OF FIREALBUM`````OH! THE GRANDEURGENRE`````RETRO SWING, ADULT YEAR````````1999ALBUM INFO:Andrew Bird's second album Oh! The Grandeur reunites him with his Bowl of Fire counterparts, as well as some special collaborators like the Squirrel Nut Zippers' James Mathus. Recorded in New Orleans, the album builds on the hot jazz/Brecht vibe that Bowl of Fire pioneered on their first album Thrills, but focuses more on Bird's witty lyrics and deadpan delivery, as tracks like "Tea & Thorazine" and "The Idiot's Genius" display. Musically, Oh! The Grandeur keeps the live, one-take feeling of its predecessor, and Bird's fiddle playing is as expressive as ever.DOWNLOAD

V.A. SHADOW MUSIC OF THAILAND (2008) [New Window]
1960'S GROOVY THAILAND?ARTIST`````VARIOUSALBUM`````SHADOW MUSIC OF THAILANDGENRE`````POP, ROCK, YEAR````````2008?Recorded in the mid-60s in Bangkok, Thailand.IN SHORT:FFFFantastic selection of Thailand's pop-guitar groups of the 60's. Truly a great find.ALBUM INFO:SHADOW MUSIC was a broad term given to the Thai guitar pop movement of the 1960s and the groups that came out of it, all under the profound influence of early Western rock and roll. British instrumental wonders The Shadows (as in Cliff Richards & the Shadows) were the origin of the genre's title, also coined 'Wong Shadow' or early Thai 'String' music.Shadow records were often marketed as 'Thai Modernized Music' which it was in the truest sense. Traditional Thai melodies were given the Shadow treatment; incorporating rock, surf, a-go-go, exotica, soul, blues, Latin and other worldly styles of the times. Inventive compositions and instrumental genius meet the occasional odd vocal arrangement and the results range from plaintive guitar and organ-driven lullabies to full-blown electric garage folk-psychedelia!Featured on this collection are a handful of the leading recorded artists from the time; P.M. Pocket Music, The Son of P.M., P.M.7, Jupiter and Johnny Guitar. Throughout the 1960s, these groups forged a unique and highly self-referential Thai sound. One time pressing of 1500 LP copies and each of these beauties come in a full-color heavy-duty tip-on gatefold jacket featuring gorgeous original Thai Shadow LP artwork and of course 180 gram vinyl, so don't sleep on this one.DOWNLOAD

ETHIOPIQUES - BLEEDING ETHIOPIA (2009) [New Window]
MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL MUSIC FROM ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING AFRICAN COUNTRIESARTIST`````VARIOUSALBUM`````ETHIOPIQUES - BLEEDING ETHIOPIAGENRE`````JAZZ, FUNK, FUSION, R&B, TIGRIRNA MUSIC,YEAR````````2009COMPILATION BY BLEEDING PANDA WHY?This is one of my dearest compilations. It contains a personal selection from a 23 disc set of Ethiopian urban/funk/jazz/tigrirna music, mostly from the 60's and 70's.Passage from "Haile's got a brand new bag" by Robin DenselowEthiopian music is very different from other African styles, perhaps because the country itself, with its long embrace of Christianity and no experience of western colonialism (though the Italians did invade the country in the second world war), has had such a different history. Musically, it has never been influenced by Cuban or other Latin styles, unlike west Africa. Instead, Ethiopian musicians looked to their own traditional music and to black America - a combination that came together in the extraordinary experiments of the 60s, when they created their gloriously distinctive fusion of local styles with American R&B, funk and free-form jazz.INFO ABOUT THE SERIES:Ethiopiques is a series of CD's featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians. Many of the Ethiopiques CDs compile various singles and albums that Amha Records, Kaifa Records, and Philips-Ethiopia released during the 1960s and 1970s in Ethiopia. Prominent singers and musicians from this era appearing on Ethiopiques releases include Alemayehu Eshete, Asnaketch Worku, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke, and Tilahun Gessesse. However, some Ethiopiques releases are new recordings. The Paris-based world music record label Buda Musique began the Ethiopiques series in 1997 and initially compiled Ethiopian popular music releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the subsequent CDs focus on traditional music, while others highlight individual musicians or specific styles. As of September 2007, there have been 23 releases. None of the CDs feature today's synthesizer-based Ethiopian pop music. Francis Falceto is the editor of the series.DOWNLOAD

PETAR DUNDOV - ESCAPEMENTS (2008) [New Window]
REAL TECHNO REVIVALARTIST`````PETAR DUNDOVALBUM`````ESCAPEMENTSGENRE`````TECHNO, MINIMAL, RETROYEAR````````2008 WHOA!Now, since i tend to trust in techno music ever since I started listening to it and since I always knew that it doesn't matter when mainstream techno easily and frequently starts to sound like pure empty crap (just like the rest of the mainstream music) and that this genre should be respected by critics just like any other genre, great examples of electronic repetitive brilliance always come as a huge breathe of fresh air which reinforce my desire to either dig up old stuff or wait 'till something new comes along.Escapements is a beautiful injection and a slap in the face to the industry. It's retro in the truest possible way, the songs reach climax using only the hihats and crashes (just like it used to be) and the melodies never, ever stop. Read the great review below from some unknown source.ALBUM REVIEW AND SOME BIO:Techno music is a funny old game at the moment. The merest hint of fashion, or ego, and the old guard are up in arms. In 2008 then, they are marching with pitchforks on Berlin, waving banners proclaiming we want the old Hawtin back. Its understandable, of course. This music was never about image, less so personality (put up your hand if you remember Rising Highs infamous Faceless Techno Bollocks t-shirts). It was owned by no one, a treasure discovered by those fortunate and open-minded enough to appreciate it simply on the basis of form. A lot has changed. Mixmag proclaimed that techno is now officially sexy music. Er it always was, thanks. But cue media frenzy. Everyones moved to Berlin. Minimal is a get this new sound... dont make me laugh. Sure, there is a slew of copycat, dullard 4/4 records going around that are about as cutting-edge as the Kaiser Chiefs, but this does not a musical revolution make. Far from it. And yet, as always, there are gems to be discovered by the adventurous. Techno isnt dead, its just suffering from a dodgy botox job and a sketchy PR consultant.Petar Dundov is a Croatian producer whose new album Escapements is a thing of absolute joy. Despite a number of previous releases, including one for Jeff Mills, I hadnt come across his work until now. What Dundov has achieved so effortlessly here is to cross the apparent gaps in the world of techno, to remind us all of some things we may have forgotten. This album takes the word minimal and applies it in the classic sense long, meandering pieces that seem to do little yet are constantly evolving. Drums are pared right back, whole tracts of the album are powered by a simple kick and nothing else. You get the feeling that the club will explode with the momentous arrival of a hi-hat. And it will. But that wont be for the lack of anything else going on. This album contains heavy synth action. This album contains a lot of gasp! arpeggios. For the oldest of the old guard, there was a time, fabled in the history books, when even trance was not a dirty word. Before it was co-opted by fluoro-adorned crusties in the '90s, trance and techno were almost interchangeable terms, particularly if a track was long and repetitive. Escapements harks back to this period and beyond (She In Purple gives a nod to Italo disco), but its not wilfully retro. It simply takes the perceived rules of modern minimal, techno and trance and throws them out of the window to create something rare: a truly honest record. And it bangs. The single Oasis is a monster. It is almost impossible to explain in words just one of those tunes that is ten minutes of big sound system perfection, a guaranteed future classic. But Escapements also contains deep and reflective elements: Waterfall, for example, could easily be straight out of the Motor City with its big strings and deep, driving groove. Dundovs not afraid to throw the drums out entirely either, with both opener Kanon and closer Anjas Theme stripped bare of them.So refreshing then, to hear this album. This is about as real and purist as techno music gets in 2008, and proves theres plenty of life left in the old dog yet. Time to stop worrying about Hawtins jedi-knight-meets-flashing-bluetooth-box shenanigans and start concentrating on great techno records again. Make no mistake, in Escapements Petar Dundov has supplied us with one.DOWNLOAD

EDEN AHBEZ - EDEN'S ISLAND (1960) [New Window]
One of the goofiest efforts in the goofy exotica genre -- and brother, that's saying something, given the stiff competition.ARTIST`````EDEN AHBEZALBUM`````EDEN'S ISLANDGENRE`````EXOTICA, KITSCH, OBSCUROYEAR````````1960 I'M BACKFirst, I want to thank everybody for their kind words of support for this blog of mine. I practically gave it up some months ago but then I checked my downloads which skyrocketed recently and started reading a shitload of positive comments. Obviously, people are diggin' my eclectic taste in everything that ends with .mp3. So -- I am back. Kachoing! So, here's a great, great (one of the best) goofy odd 60's exotica albums of all times from one of the weirdest and unexplained composers ever. It's kitschy and almost child-like atmosphere, brilliance of arrangement with tasteful yet naive choruses of paradises lost and psychedelic roads of calmness, definitely lock-up the age of relaxed psy music makers into the 60's. It is very strange how far and "romantic" this record sounds. It's like we will never hear something this childish done with such an effort for detail.WHO'S THE ODDBALL?Ahbez boasted a resum as colorful and mysterious as his music. Born Alexander Aberle in Brooklyn in the early 20th century, he changed his name in the 1940s shortly after moving to (where else?) California. A hippie a good 20 years before his time, he cultivated a Christ-like appearance with his shoulder-length hair and beard. He claimed to live on three dollars a week, sleeping outdoors with his family, eating vegetables, fruits, and nuts. One of the genuinely strange characters of pre-rock American popular music, Eden Ahbez's main claim to fame was as the composer of "Nature Boy." The melodically and lyrically beguiling song was a huge pop hit for Nat King Cole; it would be covered by many other reputable performers, including Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and the Great Society (Grace Slick's pre-Jefferson Airplane band). But Ahbez's modern stature rests on a 1960 album that mixed exotica album and beatnik poetry. It rates as one of the goofiest efforts in the goofy exotica genre -- and brother, that's saying something, given the stiff competition.ALBUM REVIEW:Musically, Ahbez' 1960 outing was squarely in line with the exotica fad, utilizing then-unusual combinations of instruments (flutes, bongos, vibes) and sound effects like creaking boats to conjure up the aural equivalent of a tropical breeze. Unlike Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman, Ahbez often added his own spoken poetry, speaking of coves, paradise, and other idyllic subjects. Occasionally he even sang in a thin voice (he's no Nat King Cole). Even those who share Ahbez' yearning for heaven on earth must concede that his recorded effort to invoke these states is, to put it bluntly, sophomoric. Yes, it's good for some snickers from the exotica revival crowd, but that's almost definitely not what he had in mind when he was making this.DOWNLOAD
