Gateway P-7805u FX Edition Customer Review

This computer is awesome. It has handled every game ive thrown at it and ive played alot of new games with it. the hdmi is always helpful, and the media touch pad thing at the top is sweet (if pretty useless) i only use the mute, and volume controls. if there's one bad thing about it, its the usb slots. theres only 3. i always seem to need just that one extra port, but i get used to it. it has firewire and esata tho, so thats a def plus. wireless n never hurts either. ive never had any crashes and ive had it for about three months now.

helpful hint: this computer + windows 7 + google chrome = pure awesome.

This product is great for being able to view AND record on video or dvd and serves the purpose for which I bought it - to accompany my new 37" Toshiba Flat screen for movie viewing, and also to record shows that I might not have time to watch in real-time for later viewing. The only thing that is a little frustrating is that the response time from remote to machine is delayed. Also - even if you push the buttons on the unit itself, it doesn't respond quickly. You have to wait for a few seconds for it to do what you tell it, so just make sure you don't press the buttons a whole bunch of times if it's not reacting fast enough - and learn how to be patient with it.....

The quality of the picture is excellent. I don't have an HD setup, but it seems as though the quality, even on LD is somehow enhanced. Very happy with it. The tray for the DVD seems a bit on the flimsy side and caution is needed. Also, from advertising that I read about this, I was under the impression that it could play Dual Layer, but it won't play DL that's been generated on a PC. It makes that very clear in the owner's manual. You may want to download a copy of the owner's manual to verify it will play what you want it to. But otherwise, a 1000% better than the DVD player I used to have. It is a well designed quality product.

The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

Long-Lasting Battery
The 15-inch MacBook Pro now includes a newly engineered lithium-polymer battery that that lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge thanks to advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology. The battery is built right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. This non-removable battery also provides a longer battery lifespan of up to 1000 recharges--meaning fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

Giving it a lifespan of up to 1000 recharges required breakthroughs in battery technology. Apple electro-chemists developed advanced chemistry that maintains the battery's charging capabilities longer than ever. And while most notebooks wear down their batteries by charging them at a constant rate, the 15-inch MacBook Pro takes a different approach. Using an Apple-developed technology called Adaptive Charging, a microchip on the battery constantly communicates with the computer to determine the optimal way to charge its cells, adjusting the current up and down depending on a variety of conditions. Combined, these advancements offer a dramatic improvement in battery lifespan: more than three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries--up to five years.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output
This 15-inch MacBook Pro combines the efficiency of an integrated graphics processor with the desktop-class performance of a discrete graphics processor thanks to the inclusion of both. Out of the box, it runs the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which provides plenty of performance for everyday use with up to 5 hours of battery life. But when you need turbocharged performance for the most graphically intensive tasks, the discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor delivers--such as for demanding 3D games like Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. And thanks to a new graphics architecture, it's easy to switch between these two processors. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory, while the 9600M provides 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 video memory.

The MacBook Pro includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory
The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to USB 2.0. The 4 GB of PC3-8500 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 8 GB.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. Environmental Considerations
Apple has worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins that are a common part of computer manufacturing. Apple engineers removed the majority of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more in the MacBook Pro.

This is amazing laptop! Gorgeous display, extremely useful trackpad, powerful CPU, lots of RAM, very solid feel (because of unibody aluminum frame).
I was afraid that there would be lots of glare on this glossy glass screen, but it turned out that you don't see any glares if you use laptop indoors and we use it indoors only. Also it is so nice and easy to wipe this glass screen!
We really liked software which comes out of the box. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is so quick and so handy! And iLife 09 is just brilliant. We really liked the way iPhoto recognizes faces and with this feature we sorted out all our photo collection - thats awesome!
This laptop is great for home, but it is as well great for work. We installed Adobe CS3 suite (I just don't have CS4 yet) and iWork 09. These things work really well!
We bought this model because we need reasonably large screen and high performance to work with Adobe Flash/In Design and so on, but at the same time we wished laptop to be rather lightweight. This model fits our expectations really well.
And we didn't choose 15" with better graphic chip, because we don't play games.

Gateway NV7920u 17.3-Inch Laptop (Cherry Red) Customer Review

I have had this laptop for over a week now. It offers a lot for the money. The i5 seems to fly. I am at a hotel now and it got onto there WI-FI with no problem. I could have saved 0.00 by not getting the blu-ray but now I am more up to date. The screen is so big and clear I see no reason to ever buy another desktop model. This is more than enough computer for what I use it for. I think the person before me must have gotten a defective Gateway. It is too bad for Gateway that their help and support people did not take care of him like Amazon takes care of their customers.
I have an eight year old Gateway and I hope I have as good luck with their new company and product as I did with the old one. If I have a problem with this one I will come back with another review and let you all know. Their support may hurt them in the long run.
I cannot say enough good about the customer support, speed of delivery and courtesy of Amazon. SUPPORT is why people come back.

Advanced timer programming lets you use the unit like you would a VCR, specifying a time and channel for recording, and built-in Gemstar VCR+ C3 greatly simplifies this. Choose from 3 separate formats, depending upon your desired quality and available disc space: Dolby Digital 1 (192 kbps), Dolby Digital 2 (384 kbps), and linear PCM (1,546 kbps).

For playback, ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs (switchable between 480p and standard 480i) provide great color detail and high purity when connected to compatible televisions. The unit also has standard composite- and S-video outputs, with an RF coaxial output for passing tuner signals to an external device such as a VCR (the RF output does not pass a DVD or HDD signal). Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Panasonic DVD LS855 - DVD player - portable - display: 8.5" Customer Review

This panasonic is my second portable DVD player, the first being a Mintek which I think I paid around 0 for about 6 or 7 years ago. I used it a lot for car trips and plane rides and dropped it a while back so it's got a broken connection part but it still works. I wanted something with a headrest mount for kids in the back seat and longer battery life then 2 hours.
These things have come a long way! I paid 0 for the LS855 and it's got a 1.5inch bigger screen. The picture quality is infinitely better on the Panasonic. The sound is louder and better in quality. The battery pack on the Mintek was as big as the base of the unit itself while the battery pack on the Panasonic is like the size of a big cigar. The Mintek wouldn't fast forward without the remote...which I found irritating since I didn't want to carry the remote with me. I read from a review that someone couldn't get the Panasonic to fast forward. You hold down the fast foward to toggle and select a fast forward speed and then hit play to stop the ff.
There's a chart in the manual that says you should get 6 hours at lowest brightness using a headphones. I tested this and got 6 hours and 45 minutes. Wow! It was a little dim but definitely visible.
I liked the Sonys too but a similar model in specs has no headrest attachment and was more expensive. The headrest attachment is simple to use and the adjustable screen makes the unit streamlined so your child can't hit it by accident.
The one drawback is that the plastic on the unit is definitely lighter weight and thinner...seems a bit flimsy. But that contributes to it's portability. Happy viewing. :)
