But the Lady Panthers put that idea to rest early as they opened up a 38-18 lead by halftime and cruised to a 75-38 victory.
Stuttgart took the game’s first lead shortly after the opening tipoff but Jena Kelley rattled home a 3-pointer up top and Katie Dixon added a trey from left wing before Kelley drove left baseline and dropped a floater over two defenders, giving Heber an 8-4 lead, which only lasted a couple of minutes as the Lady Ricebirds tied it back up at 8-all.
Elizabeth Krug scored the next five as she made a jumper from left elbow, plus the foul and completed the 3-point play then Krug picked a steal and scored in the open floor. After Stuttgart notched a free throw, Dixon drilled a 3-pointer from left wing but Stuttgart turned a steal into two points, leaving Heber with a 16-11 lead going into the second quarter.
Stuttgart’s Quita Piggie popped a 3-pointer up top as the Lady Ricebirds pulled within two early in the second before Heber retaliated with a 22-4 run to close the first half. Tara Stevenson got Heber started with a bank shot in the lane then Hali Tuy got a putback in transition, plus the foul. Tury completed the 3-point play then Stevenson got a stick back before Tury swiped a steal and scored.
Heber’s onslaught continued as Brook Blankenship made a short jumper from left baseline but Stuttgart made two from the line before Dixon buried a 3-pointer up top off an assist from Blankenship.
Blankenship and Krug each hit two from the line as Heber’s lead ballooned to 34-6 before Piggie sliced down right side of lane for a layup. Stevenson responded with a jumper in the lane off an assist from Tury then Krug grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a short bank shot at the buzzer, giving the Lady Panthers a 38-18 lead at hafltime.
Stuttgart used a 10-2 run to pull within 12 midway through the third quarter but the Lady Ricebirds lost control of their emotions when Heber hit them with seven quick points, starting with a putback by Tury.
After making two free throws, Kelley completed an old-fashioned 3-point play then she picked another steal and the Lady Ricebirds were whistled for a shooting foul and technical foul as they began to loose their cool, even with their head coach.
Kelley made all four free throws then she nailed a deep 3-pointer from left wing as the Stuttgart players began begging to come out of the game, trailing 54-28.
Kelly added two free throws and Dixon ripped a 3-pointer from right wing off an assist from Krug but the two squads traded baskets in the closing minutes, leaving Heber with a 63-31 lead entering the fourth quarter.
With the clock running continuously due to the mercy rule, Heber outscored Stuttgart 12-7 in the final eight minutes of play. Kelley scored six points to begin the quarter and Rhylie Gachot and Magen LaRosa later added buckets. Taylor Hinton and LaRosa each added free throws down the stretch, setting the final at 75-38.
Kynsha Geans led Stuttgart (13-7, 6-4) with 10 points and Piggie followed with seven. Kelley scored a game-high 29 points, including 18 in the third quarter alone for Heber, while Dixon added 12, Krug followed with 11 and Tury chipped in seven.

Not after he dropped 31 points on the Ricebirds in their last meeting, including a game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
They handled Rockwell this time around, holding him to only two points but that opened up the rest of the floor as the Panthers defeated Stuttgart 63-50, although the final score didn’t indicate how thoroughly Heber hammered the Ricebirds in this 2-4A Conference matchup.
“This is what he saw last night against Bald Knob too,” said Heber Coach Kevin Kyzer. “They chested him up but it’s opening things up for guys like Austin Brown, Wes McMullen and Michael May. With all the attention Caleb [Brock] and Tanner are getting right now, we’ve got to find ways to get them the ball but it is opening things up for other guys. I wouldn’t be surprised if DeWitt doesn’t do the same thing Friday (tonight) so we’ve got to work on setting better screens. We did a nice job of getting the ball in the paint tonight and getting those guys going.”
McMullen got the Panthers rolling in the first quarter with 11 of his game-high 22 points while Brown scored four of his 18 points as the Panthers dominated the frontcourt. McMullen canned a jumper from right side to get Heber started and Brown followed with a bucket from right block before McMullen scored in transition off an assist from Brock. Brock added a 3-pointer as Heber’s lead grew to 9-5 before Brock found Brown in transition for a bucket.
After May drained a 3-pointer from left corner, Stuttgart pulled within two but McMullen responded with seven points to close the first period while the Ricebirds managed one bucket. McMullen got his personal run started with a tough bank shot from right side and he completed the 3-point play then he got a one-handed tip in on a fast break and later added a jumper from right elbow off an assist from May, giving Heber a 21-14 lead entering the second quarter.
Stuttgart’s Devonte Ice made a 3-pointer up top to pull the Ricebirds within four early in the second but Heber pushed its lead back to five when Brown scored off an assist from May and his brother Anthony Brown added a driving layup, plus the contact.
Anthony completed the 3-point play as Heber pushed its lead to 26-21 then McMullen hit a pair from charity stripe and May found McMullen cutting through the lane for two more, boosting Heber’s lead to seven.
After Thomas Wofford made a free throw for the Ricebirds, Heber closed the first half with a 6-0 run as Austin Brown recorded a stick back then he scored again off an assist from May before Brock drove left baseline and finished with a double-clutch reverse layup, extending Heber’s lead to 36-24 at halftime.
McMullen scored seven more in the third quarter as the Panthers outscored Stuttgart 14-9 for the period. Brown added four more and May popped a 3-pointer from the left wing as Heber took a commanding 50-33 lead to the final eight minutes of play.
Stuttgart opened the fourth quarter with five straight before May drilled a 3-pointer from left corner, Brown sank a free throw and Brock nailed a deep 3-pointer from left wing while being pushed out-of-bounds for a foul. Brock completed the 3-point play and Rockwell added a steal and finger roll then Brown made a pair from the line as Heber’s lead grew to 62-38 before Stuttgart closed the gap with a couple of late runs, leaving the final at 63-50.
Ice led Stuttgart (4-15, 1-9) with nine points while Jarren Smith and Charles Coleman each scored eight. McMullen (22 points) and Brown (18 points) combined for 40 points to lead Heber (15-6, 10-1) while Brock and May each chipped in nine.

Gipson completed the 3-point play, giving the Jr. Lady Ricebirds a 10-8 advantage at intermission.
The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter as Cassandra Hogan hit a short jumper off an assist from Gipson but Attendorn answered by driving left side for a layup before Deysia Mitchell followed her own miss for two on a fast break, leaving Heber with a 14-10 deficit.
Mariah Allen pushed Stuttgart’s lead to seven with a 3-pointer from right wing off an assist from Raegan Raper and Allen added a free throw before Richards scored from left block off an assist from Gipson.
Bednar got a stick back following a steal by Madison Simpson as the Jr. Lady Ricebirds took a 22-10 lead to the final six minutes of play.
In the opening minute of the fourth, Attendorn used a ball fake to get free for a jumper from charity stripe but Raper answered with a fade away jumper from right baseline before Skylar Johnson made a pair from the line for Heber.
But Mitchell followed her own miss for a basket, plus the foul and she completed the 3-point play as Stuttgart’s lead ballooned to double digits at 27-16 before Lexis Massey drove the lane for a layup and Johnson hit Mary Lawrence in transition for another bucket, leaving Stuttgart with a 27-20 lead with 1:08 remaining.
After Bednar made a free throw, the Jr. Lady Panthers kept clawing away as Johnson made a bank shot from right side then Massey and Simpson traded free throws before Johnson nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, setting the final at 29-26.
Bednar paced Stuttgart with six points and Mitchell chipped in five.
Johnson led Heber with seven points and Attendorn followed with six.

Kramer made another free throw but missed the second, however, it worked out well for the Jr. Panthers as Bly corralled the rebound and scored, giving Heber a 16-12 lead.
Smith pushed Heber’s lead to seven by stripping a steal and finishing, plus the contact and he completed the 3-point play but Deion Johns responded with a stick back before Kramer turned an offensive rebound into a pair of free throws.
With Heber leading 21-14, Johns got a putback from right block before Kramer sank two more free throws, giving the Jr. Panthers a 23-16 lead at intermission.
Bald Knob pulled within two early in the third quarter as Cantrell made 3-of-4 free throws and Johns got a putback before Kramer drilled a 3-pointer off an assist from Smith. Trailing by five, Bald Knob closed the third period with a 7-0 run as Johns pulled down an offensive rebound and hit a fade away jumper then Kee found Cantrell cutting to the hoop for a basket, plus the foul. Cantrell completed the 3-point play then Johns sank a midrange jumper from left wing, giving Bald Knob a 28-26 lead entering the final six minutes of play.
Kramer gave Heber a huge lift with four quick points to begin the fourth quarter as he drove the right baseline and finished with a tough shot between two defenders then Kramer came up with a steal and scored before Smith turned a steal into two free throws, giving the Jr. Panthers a 32-28 lead.
After Rudy McGlothlin scored from right block, Kramer hit a midrange jumper from left baseline but McGlothlin answered with a short jumper from left side, sparking a 7-0 run to close the game.
With Heber leading 34-32, Cantrell scored inside off an assist from Kading then Hydron found Cantrell for two more as the Jr. Bulldogs took a two-point lead with one minute remaining.
Heber saw its chance to tie go away when McGlothlin came up with a steal that led to a free throw then McGlothlin secured another steal as Bald Knob pulled out a 37-34 victory.
Cantrell led Bald Knob with 12 points and Johns added 10. Kramer scored a game-high 17 points for Heber while Bly and Smith each had six.

width="130" height="108" alt="blondie.jpg" title="blondie.jpg" align="left" />
The Jackson County Humane Society is in need of volunteers and cash donations to maintain and improve the local shelter for stray animals.
Volunteers are needed to assist with grounds and interior building improvements, walking the animals, conducting follow-up interviews with people who have adopted dogs, foster parenting the strays and playing with puppies.
The grounds at the shelter need to be filled in and leveled to help with drainage, according to Dr. Mary Robertson, humane society president.
“You can’t go out there right now without wearing rubber boots because of all the mud,” Robertson said.
Walking the dogs is a very important task for members of the group, and there are currently not enough volunteers to help with these duties.
“It is not fair to them because they only get to exercise for maybe about an hour or two each day,” Robertson said. “The rest of the time they have to stay in a small pen.”
Working with the younger dogs is another important thing a volunteer could do to help at the shelter.
“We also need people that will play with the puppies and help socialize them,” Robertson said.
The interior of the building also needs some additional work to be finished. Local plumber Bob Patterson recently put in gas lines and heaters in the structure at no cost to the humane society.
John 3:16 and members of the New Life Church have also assisted with work at the animal shelter.
“We had intended to pay him, but he refused to take any money from us,” Robertson said. “He laid all of our gas lines and installed our heaters for us.”
Someone is also needed to take photographs of the animals and place them on petfinder.com. The website has helped the group get animals adopted by people from states across the country. A fee of $50 is required for adopting an animal, but most have been spayed and neutered.
The shelter, located at the Airbase, is currently home to 24 adult dogs, 13 puppies and a cat. Four of the canines must live outside because there are only 20 individual pens and some of the dogs have been in the group’s care for as many as two years. Before the shelter was built, all of the animals were kept in foster homes.
Robertson keeps 19 dogs at her home, and 12 of those are her personal pets. She first began taking in strays about 20 years ago after a friend informed her what really happens to animals at the pound.
“I got started when I found out they were putting a bunch of dogs to sleep at the pound,” Robertson said. “I was really naïve, and I thought a dog pound was where your dog was taken if it got lost.”
Several of the animals were set to be put down that day, and Robertson chose to rescue all of them from their fate.
“I went to the pound, and they were going to put those dogs to sleep,” Robertson said. “I decided to take them all home with me.”
About five years later, Robertson, Dr. Joe David Smith, Shelia Crowder and Hanna Dickinson combined their efforts and founded the Jackson County Humane Society. The group now has about ten active volunteers and numerous members. A fee of $25 is required to join the humane society and become a member.
Some of the problems the humane society has encountered are individuals abandoning animals at the shelter without informing anyone first.
“We have had people that leave little, tiny puppies in the pens with big dogs,” Robertson said. “They have no idea if those dogs will hurt the puppies.”
The proper way to turn an animal into the shelter is to contact the humane society and fill out the necessary paperwork.
“There is a surrender form and a fee, but it isn’t as much about the money as it is that we need information about the dog,” Robertson said. “We would like to know if the dog has had its shots and how old it is.”
Another more obvious difficulty for the humane society is finding someone to adopt certain breeds or colors of canines.
“We have trouble finding homes for the mutts, hounds and black dogs,” Robertson said. “There is a stigma against black dogs, and people just don’t seem to want them.”
For more information, to become a volunteer or join the Jackson County Humane Society contact Rita Grigsby at 523-3396 or 217-5878.

of Hampton’s, to see who was the ring’s original owner.
“He graduated that same year and he knew who the ring belonged to,” Wells said.
Gilliaum then phoned another classmate, Susan Metcalf, and she called Hampton to ask if he knew where his class ring was.
The ring has tremendous sentimental value to Hampton because his mother helped him purchase it.
“My mom helped me get the money for the deposit on the ring, and she never even asked what happened to it,” Hampton said.
His mother was especially of Hampton because he was the only one of his siblings to earn a high school diploma.
“It meant a great deal to me because there were six kids in my family,” Hampton said. “I was the youngest and the only one to graduate from high school.”
Nobody knows how Hampton’s ring got from the bowling alley to the park, but he is definitely pleased it has been found and returned.
“I’m not sure how it got from the bowling alley to the park, and I will probably never know,” Hampton said. “I’m just happy that I have finally gotten it back.”
Hampton has inquired about having the ring adjusted to fit his finger and plans on wearing it in the future.
“I am going to get it resized and wear it,” Hampton said. “It will always be a reminder to me that nothing is ever truly lost.”
The ring was returned to Hampton in pristine condition and appeared as if it had never been taken out of the box.
Hampton does regret losing the ring because of what the ring means and symbolizes.
“Back then having a class ring was kind of a big deal, and they cost quite a bit,” Hampton said. “None of my high school sweethearts ever got a chance to wear it because I didn’t have it for very long before I lost it.”
At least Joan, Hampton’s wife of 42 years, does not have to be jealous of his former flames.

important.
“People should help each other out when they need it, and it is very rewarding to know that you helped somebody in their time of need,” Pascal said. “I think that is what most people want to do, but maybe they don’t know where or how to help out.”
Some of Pascal’s volunteers are jobless, but they still sacrifice their time and effort to assist others who are more in need.
“A few of the people that work with us have lost their jobs, but they are still willing to show up to help out,” Pascal said. “We have a great sense of community, and there are many positive things about the city of Tuckerman. We have people struggling to help each other out, and that is a truly wonderful thing.”
Pascal, who also helped get a safe room established at the local school, has worked all across the United States and other parts of the world to provide help for those in need, but she feels helping out in her hometown is by far the most rewarding.
“It is great for me to be able to say that I have helped open 19 schools in South Africa, but I don’t live there,” Pascal said. “I’m still very glad that I can do things like that.”
The former teacher is very pleased with what ECIO has been able to accomplish in the area, but she still thinks more can be done.
“The are about 20 people there every Monday working their little hearts out to help other members of our community, and I think that is something to be pretty proud of,” Pascal said. “People do amazing things if it is for helping someone else.”
Pascal is also delighted to have established a program providing food to local elementary school children. Backpacks are filled with food and distributed to students based on recommendations by the school.
“We are working very closely with the school, and we are so proud of what they are doing academically,” Pascal said. “They are doing really well at the elementary school.”
The program works out of the former superintendent’s office at the campus, and up to 70 children receive the backpacks each week. Parental permission is required to participate in the program which began last March. All of the items are “kid friendly” and most have easy-to-open lids.
Once feeding and clothing are children has been accomplished, Pascal hopes to provide them a place to gather and have fun.
“My dream is to build a youth center that enables kids to come and be together in a supervised environment,” Pascal said. “If we ever get to a point where we can get the money, I would love to do that.”
Pascal asserts there are very few options to entertain youngsters in the community.
“We don’t have enough things for our young people to do around here, and we need a place where they can get together and have fun,” Pascal said. “They can’t even see a movie anymore without driving to Batesville, Searcy or Jonesboro.”
Pascal even has a name in mind for the center once it is built. She hopes to name the center after current Arkansas Governor and Jackson county native Mike Beebe.
Children are our most valuable resource, and Pascal insists it is much tougher maturing now than it was when she was a kid.
“When I grew up here it was much easier than it is now, and a lot of people have forgotten that,” Pascal said. “We are always critical of our young people, but it’s not easy being a kid now.”
For more information, to make a donation or to learn how to become a volunteer, call 349-2001 or stop by the ECIO building located on Hwy. 167 next to the water treatment plant.
