My Cat Drinks Tap Water

My Cat Drinks Tap Water are a noisy lot of young men from Queensland, Australia. They make hardcore-ish electronic-ish lo-fi music and, obviously, have an acute sense of subtle observational humor (my cat usually washes down his cheezburger with tap water too).

My Cat Drinks Tap Water, or MCDTWfor usability purposeshave captured a sound similar to FOALS, Fake SharkReal Zombie and the late great Test-Icicles. I said to myself when I discovered this band, hey this sounds like such-and-such”. Only to discover that that’s the first three of their self-declared influences. Uncanny. Maybe a little semblance of The Blood Brothers to boot.

They’re low production value, but sometimes that just fits. This is a diamond in the rough, unearthed, I imagine, on a four-track in a garage, upside-down, in Australia. A diamond is a diamond, polished or dirty. Screaming, rapping, cowbells, distortion pedals, bleeps & bipsenjoy.

Rubix: ‘Baiser Sur La Disco (Rubix Refix)’

Rubix brand disco house is hot. This Amsterdam, Noord-Holland based DJ/Producer is catching major buzz, and from a little chit-chat, seems to be a nice bro to boot. He caught my attention with ‘Baiser Sur La Disco’ and the entertaining video edit found here on YouTube, put together by Tom Waist of HOMEWORK.

Under the wing of Amsderdam’s Heroes Agency, Rubix is pushing his product, and it’s a good product to push: ‘Baiser Sur La Disco’translation ‘fucking on the disco’released on Girls Love DJs Records. Rubix garners support of Fellow Noord-Holland heavyhitters Don Diablo, Jamie Fanatic, Grand Jackson, Jesse Voorn, The Videoband on out to Riva Starr in England and on out to Edu K in Brazil.

Ian Brown: ‘Just Like You (The Prodigy Remix) plus hella old UNKLE colabos

Now, one of ‘Toof’s favorite things is seeing two seemingly different favorite things commingling & fraternizing into one super-favorite thing. I’m speaking about favorite thing Ian Brown, vocalist of seminal English band The Stone Roses (‘87-’95) and favorite thing, The Prodigy, gods of industrial techno (with broadening horizons). The two got together on Ian Brown’s newest single, ‘Just Like You’ and went half on a music love-child.

The original version of ‘Just Like You’ was lifted for ADIDAS advertising campaigns and appeared on this year’s Japanese promotional compilation for sneakerhead’s ‘One By One: kzk soundtrack from Adidas Originals by Originals’ (these) as well as on the ever fashionable Ian Brown’s sixth solo album ‘My Way’ (yep, Ian Brown is the ‘09 Ol’ Blue Eyes). Tracks are pulled from coveted old favorites, including several Toy’s Factory/Mo’ Wax imprint Japanese releases for UNKLE’s 1999 ‘Be There’ single (providing the ‘Be There’ mixes), Mo’ Wax’s year-2000 compilation, ‘Art of War: Who Dares Win’ (providing the ‘Monkeys Were Dolphins’ remix), and UNKLE’s 2006 4 -disc boxset ‘Self Defense’ which features 15 mixes of ‘Reign’, including mixes from Evil 9 & RJD2a song that originally appeared on UNKLE’s epic debut ‘Psyence Fiction’ (back when UNKLE was James Lavelle and DJ Shadow)none can touch the original, IMO, but I’ll assume you heard the original; Remixes “for the heads”. Lastly a pinch of remixes nabbed from Ian Brown’s 2002 remix only album, ‘Remixes Of The Spheres’ (‘cuz I know you internets love remixes heavy posts!), on Polydor, which reps yet another UNKLE mix for Ian Brown’s 2002 single ‘F.E.A.R.’ and mixes from London’s The Freelance Hellraiser and Cedarblue.

Ian Brown will be touring Europe in 2010, and dates are posted on his site’s tour page (I hope he comes to L.A. too). Also, Ian is contending for Shockwave’s NME’s Awards 2010, so give the man a vote!

Aphex Twin vs. Chevy One – Dublicker

We’re down for this white-label. There’s charm in the no-name, no-label no-BS tracks; they’re perfectly content to exist in obscurity: no flashiness, no waving of banners. It’s just a track to find and appreciate on it’s own merit. Well here’s one, which I, admittedly, gave a listen to because it’s obviously a dubstep remix (because hey, who’s heard much dubtronica lately? Bill Laswell where are you?) & obviously a remix of Richard James’, better known as Aphex Twin’s, facemelting IDM dissertation ‘Windowlicker’. Ah yes, ‘Windowlicker’, from ‘99, back when Aphex Twin was indoctrinating people into his cult of Let’s-See-How-Far-We-Can-Push-Things, with support from the director Chris Cunningham, who really helped usher in the contemporary music video. Hollertronix 10: The Partysquad ‘Murderer (Diplo & JAYOU Remix)’ + more JAYOU Remixes

R.I.P. Hollertronix series, that club staple borne in Philly by Diplo and Low B that, in its lifetime, has seen the pair rise from small time basement collaborators and underground party hustlers to major label players and arena rockers. It helped introduced the world to Bmore and Balie Funk music and let DJs know it was okay to embrace a pluralistic club experience where it’s more than okay to crunch up a set with indie, hip hop and dance music. The seeds of Hollertronix are sown, but now they’ve grown, with the departure of Low B, Diplo has nursed the growth into the full-fledged Mad Decent label under Universal’s Downtown Records umbrella.

The last word from Hollertronix is this, a four-track banger from Amsterdam’s The Partysquad, which is the ‘Hollertronix 10′ 12-inch. It includes potential future classics: ‘Pull Up’, ‘CrazyFunkyStyle’, ‘Murderer’ & ‘Rage’.

To whet or appetites (for destruction), Diplo and English dubstep collaborator JAYOU, have given us a dubstep rendition of B1, ‘Murderer’ with that Barrington Levy vibe.

I’d like to note that, in collaborative efforts, it’s always hard to determine who exerted more influence. Dan Sena: ‘Panther’ plus remixes of Scanners & Yeah Yeah Yeahs

O.C.’s Dan Sena, former hardcore vocalist in Bullet Train to Vegas, Dim Mak alumni and lynch-pin in the Orange County dance music scene with Busywork (which, was run and residented alongside our buddy and featured artist, Clifford Lidellformerly CASIO), has something for you to hear under a discoball.

We’ve got a couple fresh Dan Sena tracks. The first and original ditty with a disco-house vibe and some electro-house “oomph” titled ‘Panther’ that makes a brother just wanna move. Uncleared samples for some unclean dancing(!), just as the music godsin all their purple crushed velvet gloryhave intended.

Next up, a remix for Dim Mak’s Scanners which was released as a single December 8th with this Dan Sena remix alongside mixes by Tittsworth, Don Diablo and Dirty Disco Youth. The Scanners always remind me of the David Cronenberg’s 1981 flick of the same name (IMDb). There’s a scene in it that resembles what listening to these Dan Sena tunes looks like and it goes like this.

New Orleans’ MC champion Lil Wayne has an infectious one with Detroit underground-com-pop-raper Eminem on ‘Drop The World’. Eminem’s frequent pop-parody raps have made him more pop-than-pop like a US Weekly magazinebut still, the man’s got talent and now-and-then pulls off something really special that reminds me why I used to excuse myself on going out Saturday nights to to listen to him spit over KMEL. Eminem’s new album, Relapse:Refill’ drops on December 21st. On this track, who shines, Wayne or Em? I know that chorus by Wayne has been in my head all day. This is probably the least “rock” song on his “rock” album, the rest: Hella autotune.

Software says ‘Drop The World’ is 145 BPM, but in actuality, it’s more like 73 BPM (half). But the that always allows some hype club remixes. Speaking of which, here’s a few remixes of Wayne tracks in the club vein. Once comes from L.A.’s own (or Glendale’s own), Flying Lotus, that was dropped on his crew Brainfeeder’s blog December 1st. Grab the whole thing at Brainfeedersite.com, which includes two Weezy mixes and instrumentals “for the heads”. My favorite take is Fly Lo’s take on ‘I Feel Like Dying’ that was originally released on The Empires ‘Drought Is Over Pt.2′ mixtape. This track has a vocal sample from folk singer Karma-Ann Swanepoels song Once, that Lil Wayne was sued over. Apparently, Swanepoel doesn’t understand mixtape, sampling and remix culture.

Lil Wayneor as they say in court, defendant Dwayne Carterpleaded guilty to weapon charges back in October for a the gun found on his tourbus by New York police in 2007. Lil Wayne, in accordance to his guilty plea will serve a year long prison sentence beginning February 9, which is just a week after the scheduled release of his upcoming rock album, ‘Rebirth’ from which the song above is taken.

The album is currently scheduled for February 1st release and is available for pre-order on Amazon now. The much anticipated, much delayed album has had a half-dozen scheduled release dates as early as April 7th. A December 18th, then 21st, release was scheduled before being pushed back, once again. However, I suspect the release date might be brought for once, as 500 ‘Rebirth’ albums sold through Amazon pre-order have accidentally shipped to Lil Wayne fans due to a shipping and release date snafu. These accidental CD sales arrived in mailboxes beginning last Mondaydays ahead of the prior release date and months ahead of the current release date. Due to this error at Amazon, leaks are sure to flood the internet in the coming weeks. If pirated copies are the only option for consumers, Lil Wayneand his record labelswill lose out. MTV chimes in on what this all means and options available, as does Billboard for a industry perspective.

If you want more and you’re feeling frugal, and don’t want to lurk in pirate waters, I highly suggest grabbing Weezy’s recent free mixtape, ‘No Ceilings’. Something that’s been on repeat in my house. It can be had by clicking-through to Mediafire.

Kite In The Air: ‘Magic Marker’

I’d like to put a little more kindling on a group that I’d like to see catch a fire: Kite In The Air. This kindling goes atop the modest pile started by MOKB and Sheena Beaston about six months ago right after the release of their debut self-titled ep.

Kite In The Air is collaboration between San Fernando Valley’s folksy songwriter Emma Lucia of acoustic act Jed and Lucia and recently-mentioned east/west electro duo WZRDZ out of The Bay & Brooklyn. The sounds they in collection are deliciously sweet electro-pop.

They liken their sound to Ladyhawke, Azure Ray & Mu. I think they’re more or less on the mark. To their list I’d also add similarities to Ping Pong Bitches, Electrocute & Tracy + the Plastics. Needless to say they’re in good company & ready to strike a fire.

Kite In The Air have released their second ep earlier this month, ‘Magic Marker’. It is a true gem, in that it is a beautiful piece of work, but also it is available free via the band’s website, powered by my new favorite distribution platform for bands: Bandcamp. Oh, not to mention their self-titled EP, that’s free too. Amazzzze.

Lupe Fiasco: Empire Strikes Back: A Love Story

Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking to the traditional hip hop, funk and soul selections. Now, Radiohead might be The Beatles of Generation Y. That said, is Lupe, as they say, pissing on the Mona Lisa? Perhaps, but in that debate, I still call it art. Go on. Go on.

There’s split track version of the mixtape available out there on the internets, but here is the original “cassette style” single track that Lupe originally dropped late last month (Mediafire).

Marinate on that while waiting for Lupe Fiasco’s next LP, ‘LOSERS’, or ‘LASERS’, as it takes a double meaning with an anarchy symbol in the second character (a symbol created by another great artist, Vivienne Westwood with assistance from pioneering hip hop musician (World Famous Supreme Team), Sex Pistol’s manager, and Vivienne’s 70s-era boyfriend, Malcolm McLaren. London’s Audio Bullys never fail! This tune is massive in the playlist. I love the Bullys because they always have A-game production and good, catchy, songwriting with signature delivery. They can do it all! The new heat is ‘Kiss The Sky’, a big room electro house stomperand def. a mad reapeater since the Audio Bullys began giving it away free for a limited time on their site, Audiobullys.com, beginning November 30th, to drum up some hype for their third studio release, dropped on Cooking Vinyl. Only 192kbps out there so far, but still, hot damn. Punk’s not dead; Electro neither.

The love affair all began with ‘We Don’t Care’ from their debut LP, ‘Ego War’ which, personally, conjures up fond blackout drunk memories of hearing it played played literally up to three times a night at Hollywood’s club Moscow about five years back, with a young Daniel LeDisko as resident (now of LA Riots). It’s a track that’s still got life in it yet, even getting new new Jenny Jones rerub makeover in wobbly brokenbeat electronica style by Brighton/London thugs, 2 Bit Thugs.

It seams like we’ve been waiting nearly a year for this to release. The Royal We (Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves and Hector) come with their tongue-in-cheek jackin’ commentary on why some people suck.

Noticed this gem tucked intoIvan Smagghe live at Robert Johnson mix while driving around the city with A.Ross. Thought it was fitting to post it given our obsession with drum machine centric boogie tech (please don’t quote us on that tag.. yikes!).

Originally out in 05, this instrumental was re-released and backed with some errrrrr ‘questionable’ reworks in 2007. The cut of choice is a little over three minutes long and is cursed with an overly exaggerated fade out yet still packs some speaker bruising low end and Dolomite inspired slop. Fans of CVS take note, you’ll undoubtedly see a few parallels here.

2562’s alt style dubstep have been a highlight around CCHQ for some time now. His somber soundscapes, spacey dub delays and ultra-minimalism have provided the sound track many laid back sunday afternoons so it’s with much excitement to his recent works under his original guise A Made Up Sound come with more of an upbeat flex.

Similar to the sounds of Joy Orbision, 2562 bridges a gap between emo-but-not-stfu-emo, dub techno, detroit and 2-step throw back. Closer is out now on the self titled Clone sublabel and comes backed with the equally impressive cut entitled Rework.

I doubt we’ll get around to putting together a best of the decade list. It’s tough enough to gather together a decent best of 2009 list (yep it’s coming soon..). No doubt we’ve given a bit of thought to what how such a list would look though.

Despite the endless supply of incredible music produced in the past 10 years, little effort would be required to include Claude Vonstroke’s Who’s Afraid of Detroit on the short list of timeless wonders. Nearly five years have passed since it’s initial release and the effect on a listener is still as profound as it was at day one.

Some time has also passed since VonStrokes last visit to Toronto. Luckily, tomorrow night he’ll be at Mod Club on College along with some of the CC family to wrap up the year right. An added bonus of dj’ing is every once in a while you get to visit rather striking venues; personally the most impressive being the Rem Koolhaas / OMA designed Casa da Musica in Porto, pictured above, followed closely by Stalin’s present to the city of Warsaw, the Palace of Culture and Science.

From a less architectural point of view the winner of the joint category club / restaurant / gypsy camp / circus / theme park is (or was?) Bar 25 in Berlin. In addition to all the things mentioned Bar 25 is a record label releasing “minimal” house perfectly fitting the soundtrack of those Monday morning after hours. ‘Nur Mal Kurz’ by Nicone and Sascha Braemer was the bar’s anthem this past summer. Personally I never was that sure about the original or it’s potential to be played anywhere else than it’s home base (see the hallucinogenic video of it here). However Philip Bader’s remix did the trick. Below is a gentle re-edit of the remix with most of the direct vocal references to losing one’s mind at Bar 25 removed and the best parts extended. Enjoy. It’s like the summer never went away.

I made the unfortunate mistake of “remembering” the Macarena the other day and visuals of overweight mothers in fanny packs shaking their hips on the jumbo-tron at a Buffalo Bills game have been haunting me since. Not sure why I decided to kick off this post is such a manner. Maybe I’m beginning to draw some weird parallels between hype hysteria, sequenced dancing, my mom and errrr… funky?

I’ve picked up a few cuts in recent weeks that depart from the rnbvox/conga/123step hyperbole formula and opt for stripped down drum machines, chicago house nods and spacey pads. Check our recent posts on D-Malice for some great examples.

CC Mixtape 003 - Kenton Slash Demon

The third installment in our CC Mixtape comes today courtesy of Kenton Slash Demon. Best known in Scandinavia as members of the critically acclaimed Danish indie band When Saints Go Machine, their high-tech alter ego Kenton Slash Demon have spent the better part of 2009 shaking speakers and topping charts with their latest Tartlet Records EP Khattabi.

Championed by the likes of Claude VonStroke, Luciano, The Martin Brothers and Brodinski,Khattabi’s chunky low end and syncopated rhythmic section stood out as one of this year’s most creative dancefloor cuts. Their forthcoming EP Sun can be expected in the beginning of 2010 and which features an appearance by Danish band Oh No Ono.

The outbreak began in July 1518, when a woman, Frau Troffea, began to dance fervently in a street in Strasbourg. This lasted somewhere between four to six days. Within a week, 34 others had joined, and within a month, there were around 400 dancers. Most of these people eventually died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.

Historical documents, including “physician notes, cathedral sermons, local and regional chronicles, and even notes issued by the Strasbourg city council” are clear that the victims danced. It is not known why these people danced to their deaths, nor is it clear that they were dancing willfully.

As the dancing plague worsened, concerned nobles sought the advice of local physicians, who ruled out astrological and supernatural causes, instead announcing that the plague was a “natural disease” caused by “hot blood”. However, instead of prescribing bleeding, authorities encouraged more dancing, in part by opening two guildhalls and a grain market, and even constructing a wooden stage. The authorities did this because they believed that the dancers would only recover if they danced continually night and day. To increase the effectiveness of the cure, authorities even paid for musicians to keep the afflicted moving.

BRAIDEN - Journey Home

As well as close Night Slugs fam, Braiden is also one of our favourite London DJs.
For his contribution to our podcast series, Braiden has put together a specially themed mix that showcases some of his key influences - synth-heavy old-skool electro, boogie-funk and technicolor-saturated techno.
For many of the current crop of UK producers and DJs, Drexciya has been just as important as Tuff Jam, So Solid or DMZ - their music resonates with the vibes of Detroit as much as those of London. Braiden's mixtape is peppered with a few modern-day synth-n-bass bangers too, neatly setting up a nuum-friendly context for some of the older styles to be revisited.

A few words from the man himself:
"My approach to the mix was to put together a mixture of electro tracks, both old and more recent, along with some other favourite tracks which fit into this aesthetic.

I entitled it "journey home" based on the Drexciya track of the same name, but also because I have sentimental feelings towards this kind of synth-based electro as it was the first kind of dance music i got into when I was about 16. I have always found something very emotive in analog synth lines - maybe it was all the Commodore 64 games I played as a kid."

Monthly chart is here but before we get into that I have a few updates:

1) lazarocasanova.com is now live! For a long time I had a "coming soon" page up but a friend of mine stressed how important a web page was even in todays social networking craze. Thing is social networking come and go but a solid artist website will always remain as a place to visit. I set up about 95% of the page in the matter of a night (no I didn't sleep). I am most excited about the main page that has random pictures load on each visit. Go take a peek! I am still making some tweaks and adding content.

2) 2nd petFood release is doing great (Gil Montiel's EP). We got great support from from a few ravers including those crazy Nadastrom lads. Also getting good feedback from other upcoming petFood releases.

3) You can take a listen to one of the upcoming petFood releases on the X-press 2 Kiss FM radio show. Yes, they are supporting again! This time they played Oscar G's remix of Comandante.

Catalog #2 on Slam's own imprint, Paragraph, is out now. The A-Side is Hot Knives and the B is called What's On Your Mind. I've been playing Hot Knives in some of my sets, especially the longer ones where I can build a few times. The song consists of rissets that lead to monumental build ups, but the fun part for me is after a few bars on the drop the song gets quiet again.

I first caught wind of Audiojack in a recorded live James Zabiela set. He specifically played the Audiojack remix of Underworld's, Holding the Moth. At first listen (while I was driving) I thought "Shit I need to ID this." And sure enough once I got my hands on this remix it immediately became a staple in my DJ sets.

This is why 9 months later when I got a friendly email from the 2020Vision guys asking if I wouldn't mind doing a review on the debut Audiojack LP I replied yes before I even gave it a listen. So here I am writing this as I am about 30 minutes into the new Audiojack Full Length titled, Radio.

At first listen I've noticed a few things. First off, the album never has a dull moment. There is constant groove and all the tracks uniquely segway into one another.

Radio kicks off the album just right. With a steady bassline and a killer combo of clap-snare. It meets two vinyl slow down effects and ends with the first segway of the album, which is creatively a radio host segment into the second track Disco Gameshow. Again, the bassline is key as it switches into a live sounding bass guitar. It has a great disco vibe with some nice string samples thrown in at random.

Jack the Keys has some mean pianos and starts giving you some hands drums. A preview of things to come which segways into my favorite track of the album, Red Eye. DRUMS.

The album continues this pattern of unique segways but Audiojack clearly thought this album through. The songs vary enough to keep fans of different dance music genres pleased. There is a broad range of sounds but all done logically.

Radio, will keep any listener engaged through it's whole journey. I personally listened to the album in its entirety at 2am.

Audiojack and 2020Vision have been kind enough to let me offer a song off Radio for free. But go and buy yourself the album as just one song does not do it any justice.

I have a hard time choosing between the two since they both do good in their own right but I have noticed Jimpster's mix fits better in my sets.

Stick with me through the amount of information I'm about to give you guys & gals.

First, my song Rosa finally came out on June 30th. I had a few people ask about this one for a while now but the label kept pushing it back for promo reasons (which ended up being a great idea). It got good support/feedback from amazing artists including Xpress-2, Omid 16B (SOS), and Derrick May (yes!), to name a few.

Rosa is part of the first Three-Oh-Five Digital EP, which is a label started by Oscar G and Stryke, I am very thankful to be on this roster. The EP features music from Oscar G, Stryke, Noise Artistry, and myself. The label will pretty much remain with this line up including Ralph Falcon. This is a great addition to what I am doing with petFood to put Miami back on the map.

Second, petFood dropped it's second release last week as well. This one is a new act we've signed from Monterrey, Mexico named Gil Montiel. It's a solid two track EP which I would describe as groovy tech-house with a bit of quirk and some nice vocal touches to boot. I am excited we have a good squad of acts signed to the label releasing some great original material and remixing each other as well. Plus we have loads of releases lined up!

Keeping with the tradition of posting a track from my top 10 here is a new one from Cadenza (Luciano's label). This one is by Ernesto Ferreyra. It has a great house groove to it with a very nice vocal sample. I'm also featuring it on the next petCast at the end of the month.

As a side not it's becoming a bit difficult to keep posting tracks as my personal music network grows. So the post counts might slow down a bit but on the bright side I'm legitimizing the content being posted here.

RIP Dress 2 Sweat / Numbers power moves

OK I admit I'm biased. But ever since their first release of booty, bmore and club bass edits, Dress 2 Sweat has been one of my favourite labels. Earlier this month myself and L-Vis had the pleasure of dropping the final ever Dress 2 Sweat release in the form of the Night Slugs EP.
D2S isn't over however - it's across-the-board party aesthetic will last on as they amalgamate with sister labels Stuff Records and Wireblock to form Numbers Records, a move that will see them basically taking over Glasgow/ the world. All is explained at www.nmbrs.net

Our aforementioned 12" comes with a CD mixed by Jackmaster that showcased the label's 12-strong catalog, showcasing the label's early roots in bmore and booty edits, thru to hybrid ghetto house, bassline and finally our own material, whatever genre that is.

I move to add Jackmaster to that list - one of my favourite DJs and the curator of both the influential Wireblock and Dress 2 Sweat labels. Along with the Numbers and LuckyMe collectives Jackmaster has defined Glasgow as a glowing outpost of global gutter music. And like some of the DJs listed above, Jack's ear for cross-genre party bangers has been taking him deeper of late.

Xmas is here and I've already busted out my Star Wars ornaments for the tree, including a Yoda tree topper (with a light-up lightsaber). I guess I should call it a festivus tree. Daniel Steinberg is one of my favorite producers as of late. All his tracks have one focus in mind and that is having some fun on the dancefloor. Art Basel is here in Miami again. Last year I was part of a great show @ Grass that included Shaun Reeves, Seth Troxler & Matthew Dear. The weather was perfect which made the whole idea of the show being outdoors just perfect.This year I am playing again for Safe. Safe has been pretty much responsible for bringing the underground acts to a very mainstream Miami. I am very pleased to be playing alongside Argy & Radio Slave this time around.

This is a track I cam across recently and I have so much fun playing it out. It's from an EP between Niko Schwind and Kellerkind, they each have three (mighty tasty) tracks on it, my favorite being Hangover. It's a great twist to the classic house sound which I feel is the direction a lot of dance music is heading back to next (see Reboot's latest, Enjoy Music). Love the very limited use of the vocal it is super effective.

Octoberfest

October means pumpkin beer and great weather (in Miami atleast). This time last year I did a side project (called Nitemares) where I sampled horror films and made Hell Cab. I also did a Nitemares dj mix. I've thought plenty of times of doing the same this year, I just have a lot of work and I am not sure I'll make the Halloween deadline. I will hope to get it done early November atleast.

The next petfood podcast is now up. This one is mixed by Diego De La Vega, he has a release titled Ormigas, that will be forthcoming on petfood.

WHAT'S A YARDCAST?

Several weeks ago DJ Oneman started streaming live sets from his bedroom at www.ustream.tv/channel/yard-sessions. With little or no prior notice he would hit the stream button and jump in the mix, only after announcing it on Twitter of course. Oneman coined the term "yardsessions" for these broadcasts, and when I saw that I knew he was on to something.

I had to borrow the idea from him.

So - a yardcast is a spontaneous home/studio broadcast. It's is a phase-shift in braodcasting, what the emergence of interent radio was to FM stations.
But unlike the (relatively!) clockwork rotas of Rinse and Sub FM, the yardcast format is less like a radio show and more like a live event. It may be dissembodied, but what the 'event' of the yardcast loses in physicality it gains in universal accesiblity. We're not limited by budgets, venue curfews, commercial concerns or geographic location. Everyone can join in this party.
Unlike the institutional regidity of station broadcasts, a yardcast slots perfectly alongside tweets and status updates into the real-time continuous, ongoing stream of discourse.

That's the pompous, but nontheless important part over.
The rest is a big all-day party you're all invited to.

Catz 'n Dogz have been very consistent producers for quite some time now. I especially like that they have been mixing deep house elements into their music since I first heard them. They manage to have their own twist on house music and still deliver with deep groovin' basslines + quirky elements. Twardzioszek will be getting a lot (and I mean a lot) plays in my upcoming sets.

You may remember they had a very good full length on Mothership records called Stars of Zoo. You may also remember I interviewed them a bit more than a year ago on Shot Callin'.

I've come across a pretty neat site.

My Parents Were Awesome.

Despite just being another photo themed website (Example: people of walmart), I personally like this one cause each picture shows parents in a more innocent time before many of the worries and responsibilities. Each picture (for the most part) perfectly portrays the idea of love. Bravo to the site creator, great concept.

Speaking of awesome, I finally gave a listen to Mathias Kaden's new album, Studio 10. It has been on constant rotation in my car and a great album concept overall. This along with Claude Von Stroke's, Bird Brain LP has given me a lot of great ideas and influence to draw from for my own album. They are albums full of songs that I necessarily wouldn't play at clubs not because they wouldn't be able to move a crowd, on the contrary I think this stuff is so groovy that I actually want to listen to it at home (or in the car).

I highly recommend to buy this album. Beatport is a good place to buy.

One of my absolute favourite tunes right now is by a producer cheekily called Joy Orbison. The track in question is called "Hyph Mngo" and it's gonna drop in the near future on the mighty Hotflush label.
Joy's sound is prefect for me right now - deep, epic yet banging, morose, drenched in synths, and rhythmically occupying the uncharted territory between dubstep, garage and house that Ben UFO, Oneman, Brackles, myself and others are working hard to explore right now.

In my mind, the sound and visuals of this video could put this in D.F. as much as Kinshasa. The rhythm has a Cumbia feel (probably the tempo), and the visuals contain skeletons and lucha libre masks.

Baloji, Congolese rapper based in Belgium, who did one of my favorite music videos from a few years ago comes with a hot hot single Karibu ya Bintu (Welcome to life in Limbo) from his new album Kinshasa Succursale. The album is out, but I can't find it, so in the meantime grab his previous album, Hotel Impala.

Gee and Wizzbit are the same person of course - I never was clear what the pseudonym was about, since the sound is interchangable. The tracks are:

Its exactly the unimpeachable DJ-led rollage we brought you in Alex's brilliant '69 Allstars' mix-slash-history lesson a couple of years ago. Midnite Remix in particular is devastating - rarely has a grime producer been able to make a synth STAB so aggressively, while still having the drums push you to move so hard at the same time. It helps, of course, that we're getting these tunes in high quality for the first time.

On this subject, beyond Grimetapes I feel theres a fairly urgent need for a salvage operation to rescue, archive and release more of these 2002/3 instrumentals. Ive heard some terrible, heartbreaking things recently about crashed hard-drives belonging to Ruff Sqwad producers if some of these unreleased classics really are lost to the ages, it would represent grimes elemental transience being brought to its natural conclusion some of those dubs might NEVER see the light of day.

But don't mourn for now BRUCKOUT

Ever since myself and L-Vis 1990 launched Night Slugs back in March 2008 we've been dedicated to cutting-edge club music, and this year that focus will be manifested in the new Night Slugs label.

I'm proud to announce our first release: the debut EP from soon-to-be-star and posterboy of the UK crossover nu-skool, MOSCA

NS001, The Square One EP is out on the 25th of Jan 2010 at your usual mp3 stores with a limited 12" doing the rounds around the same time. The 8-track-deep digi EP features the title track, already a dubplate anthem of 2009 and a bastion of genre-destroying UK Club. The B-side is Mosca's "Nike", a 10-minute masterpiece: "A sense of epic grandeur befitting global house, shuddering dub echoes straight from Jamaica, Latino percussion and still undeniably UK" writes Dan Hancox in the Guardian.

Completing the package are the "Square One" remixes from Greena, Roska, Julio Bashmore, myself Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990.

To celebrate our launch we're pleased to give away Greena's amazing Square One remix!

When Kingdom was in town for the Night Slugs summer party last month I was luclky enough to convince him to come DJ back 2 back with me on my Sub FM show.

There's no CDJs in Sushon studios (serato 4 lyf lol) but after a few retweets we were kindly accomodated by INVERTED AUDIO
We were late to the session and had to rush setting up, so one deck would only play Serato and the other only CDs

London Orient: Kode9 Sinogrime Minimix

"Canary Wharf is like our Statue of Liberty," Roll Deep producer Target once said. "It pushes me on. It's like all the money is there and it's an inspiration to get your own."

Sinogrime is a sub-genre that barely ever existed, a momentary glitch in the supposedly predictable sonic geography of London dance music. Around 2002-3, with garage crumbling and the cement still drying on grime as a genre, a few producers in E3 suddenly lurched further east than they ever had before.

This is the sound of Shanghai towerblocks and the millennial promise of a new superpower, refracted through the scuffed windows of Crossways Estate in Bow. From the outset grime's sonic palette defined it as the most futurist of genres - a steel sword cutting cleanly through UK hip-hop's wooden edifice - but it rarely sounded as futurist as this.

I went to interview Kode9 for The Guardian recently (link here), and among other things we got talking about sinogrime Heres what he said:

Ive always been fascinated by these little squiggly synths, whether its been in jazz funk, or gangsta rap, or 80s synth pop and also grime. Thats what I love most about grime actually, that kind of hyper-coloured sound. I was never so into the aggression of grime I liked it in the MCs and the music, but it was actually how fucking beautiful melodically Target, Wiley, Terror Danjah, Ruff Sqwad and Jammer were the Chinese style instrumentals.

I did this mix a few years ago that was just Jammer and Wiley and Target - of just half an hour of these Chinese-style plinky-plonk sounds it was a bit sloppy, but it is fucking amazing music. Those guys were just on taking an aspect of hip-hop and blending it with really quite jarring, brash melodies.

My favourite sinogrime track ever: a superb beat by Jammer, with the riff nicked from an obscure old-school Jet Li film - I know this from watching (whatever it was called) at 3am once.. I pretty much leapt out my chair when the credits rolled and this oh-so-familiar melody started playing. Sharky Majors crushingly poignant - and ironic - lyric, reflecting on the tension between headstrong ambition and harsh reality in the wild east, is one of the most memorable in grime:

The Relaunch...

I first must apologize for the lack of updates recently... I recently started my first year of law school. Between quitting work, taking some much need relaxation time and the beginning of school I simply have not had the time or energy to devote to running the blog... One of the first things they told us in orientation this week was to make sure you find distractions from law to keep us sane. Whether it be exercise, a hobby or anything else, the message was clear.. find time to do something fun. I have always enjoyed running the blog as a means to keep my interest in music burning strong. In order to keep up with the blog and make it a product you as readers will enjoy and can rely upon to be updated regularly I must make a few formatting changes. No longer will there be semi-daily music posts or regular "tonight's show" post. Instead every Saturday I'll post an 8-10 track mixtape if you will of shit that I am listening to at the moment. The material might be new, old, rock, house, hip hop, themed or simply random. No matter what form it takes, I hope I can share my love of music. Timbaland in Chicago.

Timbaland released Shock Value II in December. There are some fun tracks on the record. I love "Meet in tha middle" and "Morning After Dark" with Nelly Furtado is catchy. There are also some intolerable tracks. The Justin Timberlake track is underwhelming - not from a production side - but the lyrics and writing is terrible. Also, there is no excuse for letting Miley Cyrus anywhere close to a hip hop record or any record for that matter. She embodies everything wrong in American music...but I digress.

Timbaland will be playing this Sunday with a live band at the House of Blues. I am interested in what his live show will be like and how he can recreate the songs live. There are few producers that have had such an enormous impact on music in the past decade, so for that alone I am excited.

New music from Lindstrm & Christabelle.

Lindstrm & Christabelle's debut album as a duo, Real Life Is No Cool, is due out January 19th on Smalltown Supersound. I have already discussed my love for this record and I even placed it (prematurely perhaps) in my best of 2009. The record merges Lindstrm's spaced-out sound with Christabelles raw and unique vocals. The female vocals mixed with Lindstrm's disco production is perfect. It might be so good I'll put it on 2009 and 2010's best of list. Check out a couple streams of some tracks off the record along with some remixes.

Timbaland should be embarrassed.

Unfortunately, spent last Sunday at House of Blues Chicago for the Timbaland show. A truly disappointing "performance" that he and the House of Blues Chicago should be embarrassed about. The Chicago Tribune wrote a great review of this bust of a performance.

While a start time of 11:00 PM on a Sunday isn't great for work the next day, wanted to see a Timbaland show backed by a live band. Sounded great. Waited until 12:30 a full hour and a half past "start time" and nothing. He didn't have an opener and there are plenty of fantastic Chicago acts that could have filled the spot.

Turns out he didn't go on stage until 2:00 AM. Which is unprofessional, inexcusable and incredibly inconsiderate. Even worse, according to the Tribune when he did emerge the show was terrible and the only "special guest" was his damn brother. Timbaland should stay away from the stage - cause obviously he is not an entertainer - and stick to the studio producing beats.

On a positive note - encourage everyone to atttend the Doom and Mos Def show on February 13th.

New record from Knightlife.

Australians are absolutely destroying the pop-disco sound and have been for about a year. If you haven't heard Knightlife you really need to check out the track "Crusader" its a funky dancefloor filler. I should know cause I played it on my computer here in my office and things got really bananas...ok no they didn't...but I can imagine this would be a great DJ song if I actually knew something about DJing.

Knightlife has some awesome remixes of Bag Raiders, Midnight Juggernauts and Cut Copy you need to check out as well. The new record is out on Cutter Records now. On a side note I could watch that guy in the yellow sweater and gold pants in the video dance all day.

Just got around to getting the XX's LP which lives up to all the hype. Check out a remix of "Islands" by 23-year-old L.A. producer and AG favorite Jason Chung aka Nosaj Thing.

I didn't overlook indie albums done by Animal Collective, the xx, or Girls. I am just not really into that sound. Nothing against those records I am sure they are fantastic but I personally didn't really get into them.

Indie records by Gossip and Atlas Sound were great but just didn't fit. There are hip hop albums by Mos Def, Raekwon Edan, Oh-No and Tanya Morgan that I didn't have room for along with other records of the electronic (James Pants, Gaslamp Killer) and the jazz variety. In all I do believe this list covers what I listened to most in 2009. Hope to hear from you. Peace.

First single off the new Gorillaz album Plastic Beach. Have always been a big fan of the Gorillaz (the art, the concept, the music) and this track is a great start. Looking forward to the record.

The Magical Properties tour is coming to Chicago on 2/16 at Lincoln Hall. The lineup features some of my favorite artists Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, and Jogger. It so happens that Magical Properties is also the name of Daedelus' new record label which released the acclaimed full length from Jogger. If you are in Chicago then highly recommend you check it out.

Not a new track and actually isn't even a real track. It was sent to me by somebody from Ed Banger but the track is a fake. Guess the joke is on me. Nice ploy however to get a bunch of eager bloggers on board. Should have known better I guess. According to this it was sent by a hacker.

Free stuff from holy ghost!

Thanks to the friends over at Discodust for the heads up on this. As you probably already know holy ghost! has put together some of the best remixes of 2009.

They made a strictly limited run remix record of physical tapes that sold via turntable lab earlier this month. Now is the time that those to cheap to support their work can enjoy the mixtapes. Given their track record this one comes highly recommended. Don't miss it this time around you have no excuse!

Fantastic set by Mr. Scruff form Cambridge Junction on November 14th. A bit old, but you really have to hear this. Nicely constructed mix.

Music from Jesty Beatz.

Nice track from LA based producer Jesty Beatz. He is from Cleveland, but based out of LA, pretty cool hip-hop track. Nice work by the backing band Spooktober a band based in Athens, Ohio that features Brian on Guitar, Miguel on Bass and Jesty himself on Synths Track and Drum Programming as well. Check it out.

Maybe my interest in King Tubby, King Jammy, Augustus Pablo and dub is limited to a select few or just laid back white kids...not sure...

Not really new it dropped in November but this really showcases the talent of FELT (Murs and Aesop Rock). The two team up with some usual hip hop customers on one of the best hip hop records of 2009. Thy are accompanied by The Grouch & Mr. Dibbs on A Tribute to Christina Ricci. Like the video as well.

New music from Danger.

French musician Danger has new EP out. The title track sounds like its from a 1980s horror movie. Danger aka Franck Rivoire has brought a really fantastic audio visual experience to life for any kid that loves video games and specifically 16-bit graphics. I would love to know the story behind the record's title 09/17 2007 (previous releases were 09/14/2007 and 09/16/2007).

Check out his myspace for some great audio visual stuff. Cool to see an artist get into all aspects of his craft. Here is a remix by German Oliver $.

A mix for patio-parties underneath shimmering sunshine. Electro, house, pop, etc - the kids in skinny jeans and skin-tight t-shirts (cap-sleeves! yeooo!) are listening to this music while they eat their lunch. A few guys with cardigans and scarves on are sitting on a bench, smoking a cigarette, and listening to this music. Some guys playing basketball - behind a school / beside a play-park - have got their sneakers on and when they rest they absorb the sunshine and the music. They love the beats. They love their dancing feet. They love to shimmy, sway, sashay across the court. The house-beats follow their footprints across the gravel.

You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve

Every time I hear the new Editors' single, Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors, my mind drifts and this is the song I think of. That drumbeat is so familiar. It's not the exact same - but when recalled through hazy memories and backward glances, it seems to be.
It almost feels wrong to feature this song as we step warily into Summer, when the song feels like its stuck in a permanent Winter - instruments played by frost-bitten hands, all exuberance and frustration, in front of kids with rosy-cheeks. A song of star-sparkles, countdowns and sleigh-rides; (seemingly) playful banter mixed with sincere sentiments.
But, in a way, it also feels right to feature this song. A reminder of Christmas* - a time of believing in something, be it Jesus or fairies or human kindness or the healing power of nature, etc. In these crazy, summer days filled with barbecues and drunken after-parties it's good to remember that sobriety can be just as pleasant. Just fill your living room with friends and watch ancient sit-com reruns on TV - perhaps after a nice Sunday dinner, or a swim in the lake. It's not that cold this time of year you know. [Info]

Fake Empire

It's almost as if the spirit of Leonard Cohen is hanging from the chandelier, smoking a Regal Filter and breathing hot and heavy in your ear. But it's a tired, resigned Leonard Cohen - all romantic longing and nostalgic regret. And try as his band might to lift the tune - blowing upon embers to rekindle a fire - they're actually the ones making the song sadder; bitter reminders dressed up in jubilant brass and lively percussion. Once upon a time things were so precious - life was exciting, everything was beautiful. Now its only the memories of easier times that remain; but recalling those bygone moments almost keeps them alive. [Info/Buy]

Said The Gramophone featured Fake Empire** just-the-other-day, and unwittingly nailed my opinion on The Twilight Sad's debut: it's perceptibly flawed - and I won't deny it - but it feels right that it's flawed. All truly beautiful things are flawed (we would probably be too suspicious of them otherwise) - yet it's the fact that they carry their flaws in such a way that we shrug them off, dismiss them, (eventually we might not even notice them). They wouldn't be the same without these minor imperfections - and we love (when we truly love) people, places, albums, et cetera, for what they are, not for what we want them to be. And my obsession with this song feels like more than just a casual fling.

*Even the clever title seems like a barbed rebellion against the consumerist nature that plagues Christmas. Sometimes it's ok to sit in and enjoy yourself; relaxed in a room full of casual smiles and easy conversation. At least that way the rent gets paid.
**I have no doubts about posting this song: it is a summer song, lilting and catching sunlight, smoke rings, sadness and the dearest of memories. Surprisingly, I'm not a fan - per se - of The National, but they do have their moments.

He was already dead when I first learned about his music -- about his adoring fans who can breathlessly recite his lyrics and song-titles, and hum his melodies as if they'd written them themselves. But Jeff Buckley isn't the music-geek's personal soul-mate -- even the casual music-listener has heard or heard of him. His cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", recorded in 1994, emulated John Cale's and - later - the song became omnipresent, used in the sound-tracks of TV sitcoms and dramas, such as Scrubs, The West Wing, and The OC.

But this isn't about the prevalence of "Hallelujah" in TV and Cinema (to read about that, and the song's evolution, read this article). This isn't even really about the fact that 10 years ago today, Jeff Buckley went for a swim in the Wolf River Marina (Memphis, TN) from which he never returned alive. Because, tragic as that is, it doesn't say much about him, or his music. We can't ascertain how someone lived, or what they created in their lifetime, merely by knowing the circumstances of their death. (Although you can read a tribute detailing said circumstances here.) Really, this is just a celebration of the fact that Jeff Buckley lived long enough to record some unbelievable music.

Before he was signed, Jeff Buckley performed in the Sin- (at that time, a caf-style venue in New York's infamous Lower East Side), where he would play mostly covers, and improvise in a whimsical nature -- always encouraging audience participation. The Live at Sin- EP got released to promote Columbia's new artist to the public before Grace came out, which was then posthumously expanded to a sprawling 2CD and bonus DVD package that truly emphasised the almost flippant nature of Jeff Buckley's talent -- he could step up to a microphone with just a guitar and his voice and wow an audience into silence. Even after his death his music continues to hush, touch, change.

It was through the release of Live A L'Olympia in 2001 that I first came into contact with his music: his guitar skills, his voice, his lyrics. My brother asked for the album as a Christmas present from our parents, and then he invited me into his room to hear it. And I was just... stunned. And when I read the liner-notes I was gutted -- why wasn't this amazing musician still alive? Why?! For a live album to be so emotional and playful and perfect -- it was and still is just incredible. But Grace, the album proper that I subsequently discovered, didn't have the same impact upon me -- the studio setting for me, appears to render some of the emotion sterile. Live, Jeff Buckley could be cathartic, amazing, overwhelming, but - to my ears at least - the studio setting removed some of these desirable elements and almost, in a sense, made the songs too pitch-perfect. In comparison to the studio albums of other artists though? It's still nothing short of incredible, and critics and fans agree (in 2006 Mojo named it the #1 Modern Rock Classic of all Time; in 2005 readers of Q magazine placed the album as #13 on their list of The Greatest Albums Of All Time.) Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk: This release left the songs as they were, in their unfinished states, as 'sketches'. Remarkably, this album, so clearly unfinished, is incredibly enjoyable. [Buy]

Jeff Buckley's influence: Admired by Radiohead, Damien Rice, and Martin Grech... enough said.

Radiohead with regards to Jeff Buckley: The vocal for Fake Plastic Trees, perhaps my favourite Radiohead song, was recorded by Thom Yorke in two takes after seeing Jeff Buckley perform. After the vocals were laid down, Thom Yorke apparently broke down into tears.

A gushing summary: Music bloggers in general are stereotyped as being obsessed with the new new NEW! with only the briefest backward glance at what's come before, but few new artists can hold a candle to Jeff Buckley in my eyes. An example of someone adept in all fields of musicianship -- his remarkable voice spanning four octaves (read more at the official Jeff Buckley FAQ), his guitar skills (which, unlike many, he only ever showed off if it was beneficial to the song -- few realise how incredibly skillful he was at guitar because of this), his interpreter's ability to transform the songs of others into his own (see the Sin- sessions for proof), his lyrics ("My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder... all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her") -- his whole craft was impeccable. Thus, despite today being the 10th anniversary of Jeff Buckley's death, his music continues to live on and touch the hearts and minds of others.

I have remixes and covers of songs I've never even heard. That is to say: the original is a foreign island. I (most of the time) have heard of it, so I know it exists, but I've never been there. Never tasted the air there, or the food, never felt the warmth or the humidity, never looked up at the skyline and felt content, never taken a dip in the water and thought, "God, it's even colder than it is at home!" But through these remixes and covers (or even alternate versions by the band themselves), I've heard of the elements that are in place - so I kind of think I know that the Mexican food there is great, Italian's not really their kind of thing, the valley's act as sun-traps and on Sundays they go there and relax, but during the week the heat is unbearable, it hardly ever rains but when it does the villages flood, they aren't skyscraper people and because of this I like them - they like to be able to see real mountains as opposed to build buildings that block out the sun, their horizon's are broader than ours, they like to skinny dip past midnight but only in the Great Georgian Lake - never in the East of Eleanor one. Are you following?

It's so hard these days to keep track of who wrote what and who fucked what up and who improved upon what. Case in point: That Kissy Sell Out song I featured - I now know that Ali Love did the talking/rapping bit, thus it was a sample, but did I know that before? No. And I found out accidentally! (by listening to some Modular Dance CD). With the ongoing increase in digitalisation, there are less liner notes accompanying the music - mp3 blogs are mp3 blogs; not sources to find out the producer, writer, remixer, trumpet, tube, flute, piccolo players, and 'miscellaneous tasks' credits.

But alas, I've strayed from the point. The point being, that there are far more (or definitely seem to be far more) remixes and covers of songs nowadays than there ever were before, and so here in these posts I will offer up two versions of each song (and the first won't always be the original) and you can decide which you like more. Or maybe they both have merit! Or maybe you might find that (remarkably) they are two different (aurally) songs despite being cut from the exact-same cloth. Say wha? Whatever. Enjoy.

Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay

Apparently this full-band rendition is remarkable. Unfortunately I can't enjoy it properly, because I'm a stickler for sound-quality, and as far as that goes, live recordings don't really do it for me, unless they're done professionally (e.g. download resource). But perhaps you can see the diamond in the dirt and love it more than the original (which, oddly, I've never really loved as much as everyone else seems to, despite often loving Elliott Smith more than they do. Go figure.)

Talk about blog-hype. This band did the rounds for so long I was ready to abandon hope on the whole discovery-of-great-bands-via-blogs thing. Y'see, I didn't get them at all at first (or even at second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth). I don't know when I finally let this song change my mind about them (or if it ever did - this is the only Midlake song I listen to with anything even approaching regularity). Imagine some sort of durr A-Team theme-tune done by a lazy psuedo-country&western band who constantly smoke and you've got this song. I know, I agree, it sounds like it's gonna be so shit, but somehow it isn't. BTWS provide extra room and softness, so if that's your thing you'll like the remix, and if that's not your thing, you won't, and if you're like me, you'll find that the changes are so inoffensive they're barely noticeable. But then, 'dance' music is all about subtlety, isn't it? [When I say 'dance' I don't mean 'dance', literally. Obviously. If you know what I do mean, you get a pat on the back from me.]

Kate Nash - Foundations

Kate Nash got very hyped up. I didn't understand why. At all. Now I do. Kind of. You should too. I've liked Metronomy ever since that Infadel's remix ("L-O-V-E-L-I-K-E-S-E-M-T-E-X!"), but I can't tell if this remix is truly enjoyable, or just interesting. Maybe you can.

I didn't even realise that Metric actually mentioned Bobby Fuller in this song! When MSTRKRFT make the song so danceable, I'm not sure I even care.

Athlete - God Only Knows (Live on BBC Radio 2) (Beach Boys Cover)
Petra Hayden - God Only Knows (Beach Boys Cover)

I really like the singer from Athlete's voice - but you can't really tell why in this close-cover of a classic. Petra Hayden's cover sticks even closer to the original Beach Boys version - forever embedded in my mind now as a seasonal song (blame Love Actually); a song for log-fire Christmases and present-wrapper-covered floors.

Bloc Party - Blue Light

I liked the fact that on the relentless first Bloc Party album this song was a chance to breathe, to sit down, to think, to relax. It's just such a good song. And the cover - it feels completely different; not less of a sigh, just a different kind. The original was hot air on a cold neck; the cover is wet lips on a warm cheek. And it feels happier too. Bloc Party are resigned, but Jon Solo sounds content. The cover has a bounce but it's so laid-back-Sunday-morning that it's almost unnoticeable - you don't so much hear the cheeriness as feel it. If I walked out of the house right now listening to this song there would be a spring in my step, accompanied by a calm sort of happiness - more three-pints-in-two-hours excited than the usual one-after-the-other-after-the-other vodka-and-lemonade buzz.

As if you couldn't tell, this wasn't mulled over for hours, therefore complaints are probably deserved. I hope I haven't offended anyone - if you could see the way I smile as I write you'd know that all jesting was really a form of love. Also, if any of the descriptions seem way off, maybe they are, but they made sense at the time. Perception is a funny funny thing.

Kissy Sell Out - Get Ready For The K Hole!

You'll recognise the music instantly. Maybe you don't know how or why but you won't (read: shouldn't) care. And you might (but shouldn't) be put off - because it seems a bit, well, louty, doesn't it? But what's social class and every-day facades got to do with the enjoyment of music*? Nothing, really. Or they shouldn't, in any case. Music should transcend all social boundaries (real or self-imposed). So I offer you this, and I hope you smile and you enjoy it. It's euphoric, and it's ridiculous. It's dance music for the Mike Skinner generation - self-conscious, tongue-in-cheek, intelligent, fun-loving, socially-aware, silly. And maybe you're thinking that this description seems a bit flattering - (perhaps it is) - but if you have experienced, or seen others experience, even some of the events detailed in the lyrics, then this song will mean so much more to you. Quite simply put, it's hilarious.

*Note: If it seems contradictory that I say social class should have nothing to do with the enjoyment of music, but then continue on to insist that 'Get Ready For The K Hole!' is more enjoyable if you understand the spot-on-ness of the lyrics - well, I'm sorry, but I'm sure you understand what I mean.

The typical student anthem remade so that it's still relevant at a time when it's become cool for indie-kids to branch out and listen to electro. A time when it's ok to go to an indie-disco where it's like, you know, an actual disco. Arty girls looking beautiful but going crazy on the dancefloor; the cardigan-wearing hipsters, notoriously known for shoe-gazing, joining in.

The original still goes down a storm at indie-discos (or, specifically, the indie-disco that used to take place in Sandinos and shall soon be reinstated - if the rumours are true). Boy and girl both going crazy to the same tune, some jumping up and down, some moshing, some head-banging. Every time the electro version (neither of these, but similar) comes on in ABC2 (in Glasgow) there's a similar effect, but it's slightly more civilised. Perhaps odd, that last statement. Not really, though, when you consider the fact that we all just want to dance and hug each other.
